The name of Scipio ‘the African’ rises like a true luminar in the universe of the military leadership of the roman republic armies. His mastery as a general, either in the strategic domain or in his tactical achievements, doesn't have any parallel with what we know about the military performances of the great roman generals. Scipio determines Rome´s military destiny during the Second Punic War, in a very difficult context, but with his own extraordinary strategic and tactical vision, he will be able to radically change the ominous destiny which seems to be reserved for the Urbe. He starts a colossal set of bold campaigns with brave and innovating military options and a comprehensive outlining of each battle, showing an ability in observing the enemy and an understanding of the legion´s capability which, we believe, were not achieved by any other commander, neither before nor after. It's surprising how Scipio attains to reutilize and reinvent the potential of his legions, availing himself of all the means that the pragmatism of his prolific imagination inspires. Aspects like his own masterly sense of opportunity, speediness, the detailed appraisement of the weather or terrain conditions, the element of surprise, the innovating use of the manipular constitution of the legion, dissimulation and the attempt to deceive the adversary, the subtle and fast encirclement maneuvers, as well as the strong psychological manipulation of his own men and the enemy´s morale are only a few of the most impressive campaign characteristics of this genius commander.
