dc.description.abstract | Introduction: Activities of daily living (ADL) impairment is one of the most important issues of ageing, leading to social, familiar and economic costs. Exercise has been identified as an effective and inexpensive way to reduce/prevent the functional decline associated with aging. The objective of this study was to compare the functional capacity (ADL performance) in an exerciser group of elderly to a non-exerciser control group. Methods: This study included 100 institutionalized elderly, 50 men, 50 women. Two groups were defined (each with 50 elderly people, 25 men and 25 women), one with regular physical exercise and a non exerciser control one, to which the Barthel Scale was applied. Outcomes: There were no significant differences in ADL performance accessed by the Barthel Scale and in general level of dependency between the groups. Discussion and Conclusion: Although this study didn’t observe a beneficial effect of exercise on functional capacity, the generalization of theses findings might be limited | por |
