A figuração das personagens de Memorial do Convento: hipótese de leitura

Abstract

Esta dissertação reflete sobre os processos implicados na construção ficcional de personagens de Memorial do Convento, de José Saramago – D. João V, Bartolomeu Lourenço de Gusmão, Baltasar e Blimunda. Apreciam-se sobretudo os processos semiótico-contextuais, retóricos, narrativos e axiológicos que permitem a criação de figuras ficcionais. As existências destes seres transitam entre o histórico e o ficcional, o real e o insólito, ao sabor da ideologia subversiva do narrador, na tessitura coerente da narrativa e na apresentação de novos mundos possíveis. Numa perspetiva fenomenológica da personagem ficcional literária, este trabalho estuda o envolvimento do leitor na construção de sentidos criados pelos ditos e não ditos do texto, modelando a figuração que expõe o potencial de transcendência reconhecido na personagem. Face à intermedialidade que a narrativa sustenta e que é estimulada pela construção figuracional, o presente trabalho aborda ainda refigurações das personagens de Memorial do Convento, concretizadas pela transcodificação deste romance noutros textos de diferentes naturezas e distintos suportes, noutros media, com particular destaque para a pintura de José Santa-Bárbara. Esta mediação é ponderada nas suas especificidades, valências e limitações, à luz de uma perspectiva dialógica dos estudos narrativos atuais, responsáveis pela revitalização da categoria da personagem. A refiguração, enquanto processo e produto, é analisada num contexto de reflexão sobre a adaptação e suporta a discussão da leitura da narrativa ficcional ao nível de uma sobrevida das personagens saramaguianas.

This paper reflects on the processes involved in the construction of fictional characters of Baltasar and Blimunda (Memorial do Convento), by José Saramago - D. João V, Bartolomeu Lourenço de Gusmão, Baltasar and Blimunda. The semiotic-contextual, rhetorical, narrative and axiological processes that enable the creation of fictional figures are especially appreciated. The existences of these beings pass between the historical and the fictional, the real and the unreal, according to the subversive ideology of the narrator, in the coherent fabric of the narrative and in the presentation of new possible worlds. Within a phenomenological perspective of literary fictional character, this work studies the engagement of the reader in the construction of meanings created by the said and the unsaid in the text, modelling the figuration that exposes the potential of the transcendence recognized in the character. Given the intermediality sustained by the narrative and that is stimulated by the figuration construction, this paper also discusses the re-figuration of the Baltasar and Blimunda (Memorial do Convento) characters, achieved by the transcoding of this novel through other texts of different natures and different frameworks, through other media, with particular emphasis on José Santa-Bárbara’s painting. This mediation is considered on its own merits, skills and limitations, in light of a dialogical perspective of the current narrative studies, responsible for the revitalization of the character category. The re-figuration, as both process and product, is analysed in the context of reflection on adaptation and sustains the discussion of the reading of the fictional novel within the terms of an overlife of the Saramago’s characters.
