| pt |
dc.description.abstract | Losing a baby in any situation always causes pain, suffering and distress, although the importance of this issue has only been recognized for the last four decades. It is a traumatic situation, which can compromise the functioning of the mother and her ability to invest in subsequent pregnancies. The main goals of this study were: 1) to characterize the situation of neonatal loss in an Angolan sample; 2) to understand if previous losses influence Angolan mothers’ investment in a subsequent child; 3) to study some psychometric characteristics of the Parental Investment in the Child Scale in a sample of Angolan mothers. Eighty Angolan mothers participated in the study, having babies between 7 and 45 days old. Forty of the women had had previous loss experiences; the other forty didn’t suffer any previous loss and made up the control group. A cross-sectional quantitative study was conducted. The instruments used were a Demographic Questionnaire, a General Questionnaire on Pregnancy and Birth, a Questionnaire to Evaluate Features related to Previous Loss and the Parental Investment in the Child Scale. Results show no statistically significant differences between the two subsamples in terms of maternal investment in the new baby. Results related to the internal validity of the items and to the internal consistence of the PICS produced low values, compared to a Portuguese study. The results are discussed highlighting some cultural specificities of the sample studied. | pt |
