Travel is a fruitful literary motif which allows, among other, to explore the identity of an individual and of a community, to establish the contact between the I and the Other, to confront distinct worldviews and to expand the traveller’s horizon of knowledge. This study takes as a starting point the hypothesis that travel can be a breeding ground for the construction and reformulation of the idea of the nation. This question is especially interesting in the case of postcolonial texts which engage in dialogue with Eurocentric representations of these territories and these nations. The corpus of the thesis is composed by four texts which depict different physical and imaginary journeys: O Turista Aprendiz and Macunaíma, Herói sem Nenhum Caráter by the Brazilian writer Mário de Andrade and Terra Sonâmbula and O Outro Pé da Sereia by the Mozambican writer Mia Couto. The choice of these two authors is motivated by the presence of identity and national questions in their literary production. Furthermore, a comparative study in the field of Brazilian and Mozambican literature potentially allows to deepen the understanding of different processes in the construction and consolidation of the idea of the nation in a highly multicultural context. Brazil and Mozambique are nations deeply influenced by their colonial history. Although the two countries reached their independence in different time periods (1822 and 1975 respectively), their communities had (and continue to have) to cope with the challenge to form a nation out of plentiful ethnic and cultural nuclei. A comparative analysis of three works of fiction and one fictionalized diary allows to explore both the singularities in the vision of each author and the continuities in the representation of the postcolonial nation. In this thesis there are used definitions of the nation and national identity proposed by Benedict Anderson and by Anthony Smith. Furthermore, another theoretical foundation for the analysis developed here is the broad critical production dedicated to the motif of travel. The studies on mythical travel, discovery travel writing and, finally, postcolonial travel are especially relevant to the reading of the narratives by Mário de Andrade and Mia Couto. The analysis of the texts under study allowed to reveal the existence of a series of common themes directing the representation of the nation by these two authors. Among these topics stand out: non-polarization between tradition and modernity; valorisation of multicultural and multi-ethnic diversity in the formation of the national identity; and, finally, the need of (re)creation and dissemination of identity references (imagery, myths, symbols) for the strengthening of the communitarian ties of belonging.
