The study of social anxiety during adolescence is well documented in literature, proving that high levels of Social Anxiety are synonym of high personal, social and academic maladjustment, of significant interference in adolescents’ lives, and it can also lead to depressive symptoms. On the other hand, both the shame (internal and external) as the self-criticism, which are quite associated with the presence of psychopathology, have been target of a growing number of studies in relation to adult population. The same has not been evidenced with the adolescent population, and in particular in clinical adolescent population, being the number of studies documented in the literature still very low. Given these facts, two studies were conducted. The first aimed to compare a group of adolescents with generalized social phobia with a group of adolescents with other anxiety disorders (not social phobia) and with a group with no pathology, in the variables of shame and self-criticism. The results revealed that the group of adolescents with generalized social phobia showed higher levels of internal shame, external shame and self-criticism than the group of adolescents with other anxiety disorders, and these, higher levels than the group with no pathology. Regarding the second study, which aimed to understand the role of internal shame, external shame and self-criticism in social phobia, the results showed that the internal shame and social anxiety were positively, moderately and significantly correlated; social anxiety showed a significant positive, moderate correlation, with the total of External Shame and the factors inferiority and others' reactions to my mistakes. It was also found a positive, moderate and significant correlation between social anxiety and factor inadequate self and the measure of self-criticism composed by factors inadequate self and hated self together, with factor hated self was found a positive correlation, low and significant. Finally, regarding the relationship between social anxiety and self-reassuring the correlation found was not significant. Also in relation to this study, the internal shame and the external shame have proved to be, singly, significant predictors to explain the social anxiety. However, when included in the same model were the factors of external shame and not the internal shame that revealed predictive power with regard to social anxiety. In contrast, the self-criticism has not proved a significant predictor to explain the social anxiety.
