This dissertation presents theoretical justifications for the relevance of an feminist anthropology of prison in the portuguese context, an interventive anthropology inspired on the feminist methodologies to question the policies that (re)produce prison and to give visibility to women imprisoned who are silenced and hidden because it is considered the prison as the institution that most contributes to social segregation and marginalization of women. Thus, this exploratory study has examined women's prisons, since the emergence of the prison in Portugal until the present day, inquiring about representations and hegemonic discourses of femininity and womanhood in the apparatus of punishment and control and how these are manifested in the women‘s prison looking, at the same time, to (re)inscribe female agency and resistance. It is verified the existence of a stratified system of sexual differentiation reproductive of these representations and discourses that are reflected in the various social and cultural dimensions |
