De Jangada rumo à Cegueira : narrativas em dois formatos : uma análise intersemiótica

Abstract

O presente trabalho tem por objectivo proceder a uma análise intersemiótica, tendo por base dois romances de José Saramago – A Jangada de Pedra e Ensaio Sobre a Cegueira – e os respectivos textos fílmicos, a fim de verificar o modo como a intencionalidade ideológico-comunicativa das obras literárias foi transposta para o grande ecrã, isto é, o cinema. Em primeiro lugar, porém, e de modo a preparar o terreno para essa análise, fazemos uma breve incursão pelo percurso literário de José Saramago e, posteriormente, dedicamos algumas páginas às correlações existentes entre a literatura e o cinema para, finalmente, dilucidarmos algumas questões que ajudem a desmistificar os juízos erróneos acerca da “fidelidade/infidelidade” das adaptações cinematográficas. Foi-nos, pois, possível constatar que o processo de transposição intersemiótica é uma tarefa nem sempre fácil, porquanto resulta de um trabalho de interpretação, conjugado com a linguagem cinematográfica, que não descura a narrativa literária de que se apropria e o seu alvo, isto é, o espectador. Desta feita, verificámos que a adaptação cinematográfica implica, forçosamente, mudanças que assegurem a (re)criação de uma história capaz de despertar o interesse e motivação do “leitor” de imagens, atendendo ao respeito pela sua susceptibilidade e nível intelectual.

The aim of this work is to carry out an intersemiotic analysis, based on two novels of José Saramago – The Stone Raft and Blindness – and their filmic texts, in order to verify how the ideological and communicative intent of the literary works has been transposed to the big screen, that is, the cinema. First, however, and to prepare the ground for this analysis, we make a brief foray into José Saramago’s literary path and, subsequently, we dedicate a few pages to the existing correlations between literature and cinema, to, finally, elucidate some issues that help to demystify the misjudgments about the “fidelity/infidelity” of the films adaptations. It was, then, possible to realize that the process of intersemiotic transposition is not always an easy task, since it results from a work of interpretation, combined with the cinematographic language, that doesn’t neglect the literary narrative, which it appropriates, and its target, this is the spectator. Thus, we verified that the cinematographic adaptation implies, inevitably, changes that assure the (re)creation of a story capable of awakening the interest and motivation of the images, “reader”, mindful of their sensitivity and intellectual level.
