Abstract: The ir aryl skeletal vibrations (1600-cm-' region) and the nmr spectrum of tetraphenylethylene dianion (TPE2-) have been recorded. Evidence points to the conclusion that the antibonding electrons of the dianion are highly delocalized and that the K-bonding electrons of TPE2- essentially retain their bonding power, requiring the dianion t o assume a nearly planar configuration
