Depressão nos estudantes de medicina e a falha na procura de ajuda

Abstract

Depression is a silent epidemic of modern times. The current context, full of complexities and vicissitudes, leads many to face emotional and psychological challenges. Medical students, confronted with an extensive and demanding academic journey, are constantly exposed to stressors on their mental health, which can culminate in depressive states. This study aims to analyze the information available in the literature regarding the prevalence of depression among medical students, identifying the contributing factors to this reality, namely, the heavy workload and lack of leisure time, high personal and professional expectations, frequent exposure to illness, perfectionism, and imposter syndrome. Additionally, the reasons why these students often avoid seeking specialized support were evaluated, with social stigma and the fear of potential implications in their future medical career standing out. Consequently, it is evident that in the absence of treatment, this condition is associated with adverse outcomes, including a propensity for developing other illnesses, social isolation, decreased productivity, substance misuse, and an increased risk of suicide. Although this is a widely discussed issue in the literature, the scarcity of studies related to preventive and support measures for students was apparent, highlighting the absence of initiatives established by educational institutions and society in general. This underscores the need for further research and ongoing efforts to reduce the rate of depression in this student population.

A depressão é uma epidemia silenciosa dos tempos modernos. O contexto atual, repleto de complexidades e vicissitudes leva a que muitos enfrentem desafios emocionais e psicológicos. Os estudantes de medicina, confrontados com uma extensa e exigente jornada académica, estão constantemente expostos a situações agressoras para a sua saúde mental, que podem culminar em estados depressivos. Este estudo tem como propósito analisar as informações disponíveis na literatura relativas à prevalência da depressão nos estudantes de medicina, identificando os fatores que contribuem para esta realidade, nomeadamente, a extensa carga de trabalhos e a falta de tempo de lazer, as altas expectativas pessoais e profissionais, o contacto frequente com a doença, o perfeccionismo e a síndrome do impostor.Foram, adicionalmente, avaliadas as causas pelos quais estes estudantes frequentemente evitam procurar apoio especializado, destacando-se o estigma social e o medo das implicações que tal diagnóstico possa representar na sua futura carreira médica. Consequentemente, constatamos que na ausência de tratamento, esta patologia se encontra associada a desfechos negativos, incluindo, a tendência ao desenvolvimento de outras doenças, o afastamento social, a perda de produtividade, o uso indevido de substâncias e o risco aumentado de suicídio.Embora este seja um problema largamente discutido na literatura, foi evidente a escassez de estudos relacionados com medidas preventivas e de apoio aos estudantes, destacando a ausência de iniciativas estabelecidas pelas instituições de ensino e pela sociedade em geral, ressalvando a necessidade de mais pesquisas e de um esforço contínuo para reduzir a taxa de depressão nesta classe estudantil.
