dc.description.abstract | Introduction: Diabetes-Associated Distress (DAD) is a consequence of the disease that represents a major challenge for many people suffering from diabetes (PD). Person-Centered Medicine (PCM) can be a method to reduce DAD. Objective: To evaluate the relationship between DAD and PCM, considering the role of the socioeconomic index, gender and age of the PDs. Methods: In a cross-sectional observational study, data were collected from a convenience sample of PD who attended consultations between November 27, 2023 and February 27, 2024, at the USF Coimbra Sul, Castelo Viegas and Santa Clara campus, in Coimbra, Portugal. A survey was applied with the “Problem Areas In Diabetes – 5” (PAID-5) and "Patient Perception of Patient-Centeredness" (PPPC) scales after consultation, as well as contextual questions such as gender, age and the questions that make up the Socioeconomic Deprivation Index, SEDI. Descriptive and inferential statistics, non-parametric as well as correlational statistics were performed. Results: In a sample of n=58, it was found that, according to gender, females had a significantly lower SEDI level, p=0.039, with no differences for the sum of PAID-5 and MCP or with age. There was a very weak, negative and non-significant correlation between the sum of the PAID-5 and MCP scales, ρ=-0.052, p=0.698. Between age and the sum of PCM of ρ=-0.055, p=0.684, weak negative and not significant; and between age and the sum of PAID-5 equally weak but positive and not significant, ρ=0.122, p=0.361. Discussion: Higher levels of feeling consulted in PCM associated to lower levels of DAD by PAID-5, which until now had not been proven, deserve future and broader studies and a matter of future study of PCM teaching in undergraduate and also in continuous medical education and continuous medical development. Conclusion: The relationship between DAD and self-perception of PCM was verified, with lower levels of DAD found when PD presents better perception of PCM. | eng |
