As antologias da poesia portuguesa do século XX

Abstract

Throughout the 20th century, we have witnessed a growth in the publication of the anthological format. From the beginning of the century until now, we can count about fifty anthologies of Portuguese poetry from the 20th century, published in Portugal, and approxi-mately twenty abroad, except for all the personal and thematic anthologies that writers, crit-ics and renowned poets decided to organize. We know that there isn’t a single anthology, no matter how comprehensive, that can represent the poetry of a country, and, for that, it is nec-essary to have many anthologies.The anthology is an archive, a place of memory, a materiality that enables memoriza-tion, reprinting and repetition, endowed, one might say, with a critical sense, as it is a collec-tion that gathers and interprets, cuts and preserves a summary of authors and texts.It is in this sense that, when analyzing the most representative anthologies of 20th century poetry, I will try to point out some paths of reading and interpretation, recurrent po-ems and their meaning, as well as the authors, analyzing prefaces and afterwordstrends, re-flecting, essentially, on the dimension of poetry gathered in anthologies, for over practically a hundred years. In this sense, it will also be useful to think of anthologies, (too)as a kind of combat against dispersion, oblivion and the irremediable passage of time.Many of the authors of these anthologies, if not almost all, have participated in the elaboration of other collections, literary magazines, have been or still are editors, critics and poets; all of them suffered from a “love sickness”, a passion or a desire that does not let them rest. However, when they put together so many poems and authors in a book, they are always careful to draw attention to the fact that the work they are carrying out cannot be considered assertive and definitive; they are just happy to point out that the compilation is the result of random or thought choices, but always subject to critical judgments.When listing the different anthologies of Portuguese poetry, I will focus on another objective that will allow us to study the representation of the 20th century, such as the “Golden Century” of Portuguese poetry. I will refer, on the one hand, to the way in which this circumstance manifests itself in the selection of poems that make up the anthologies and, on the other hand, to the way in which the anthologies help to convey this representation of the golden century of poetry. This work will also include a reflection on the importance of anthologies, as a textual typology, in the present moment and what future times have in store for them. In fact, the anthology, due to its nature as a fragmentary text, is subject to several changes, as in an in-creasingly digital age, the appearance of electronic text may presuppose certain types of reading to the detriment of others. In this way, the ambiguity of the anthological text as well as its multifunctional facet do not constitute any impediment to the anthology, as a textual typology, surviving in the modern world in the future.I could not finish this dissertation without reflecting on the importance of anthologies as unique books; They will not be better books than novels or travel reports or diaries or bi-ographies, but they are books with a very special dimension, where other books fit and where we can always return without regret of not reading them as a whole, but only what we seduc-es.

Em Portugal, ao longo do século XX, temos vindo a assistir a um aumento da publi-cação de antologias de poesia. Desde o início do século até ao momento, podemos contar cerca de cinquenta antologias da poesia portuguesa do século XX, publicadas em Portugal, e aproximadamente dezoito no estrangeiro, excetuando todas as antologias pessoais e temáti-cas que escritores, críticos e poetas consagrados decidiram organizar. A antologia é, pois, um arquivo, um lugar de memória, uma materialidade que possibilita a memorização, a reimpressão e a repetição. É dotado, além disso, de sentido crítico, na medida em que é uma coletânea que reúne e interpreta, corta e conserva uma súmula de autores e textos.É neste sentido que, ao analisar as antologias mais representativas da poesia do século XX, tentarei apontar alguns caminhos de leitura e de interpretação, poemas recorrentes e o seu significado, bem como os autores, analisando prefácios e posfácios, tendências, e refletindo essencialmente sobre a importância da poesia reunida nas antologias, ao longo de praticamente cem anos. É neste contexto de combate contra a dispersão, esquecimento e passagem irremediável do tempo que se deve repensar a função e o valor das antologias.Muitos dos autores destas antologias, senão quase todos, já participaram na elaboração de outras coletâneas e revistas literárias, foram ou ainda são editores, críticos e poetas; todos eles sofreram de um “mal de amor”, de uma paixão ou de um desejo que não os deixa sossegar. Porém, quando reúnem num livro tantos poemas e autores têm, geralmente, o cui-dado de chamar a atenção para o facto de que o trabalho que estão a realizar não pode ser considerado definitivo; apraz-lhes, apenas, referir que a compilação é o resultado de escolhas aleatórias ou pensadas, mas sempre sujeitas a juízos críticos.Ao elencar as diferentes antologias da poesia portuguesa, centrar-me-ei num outro objetivo que permitirá estudar a representação do século XX como o “Século de Ouro” da poesia portuguesa. Referir-me-ei, por um lado, à maneira como esta circunstância se mani-festa na seleção dos poemas que constituem as antologias, e, por outro, na forma como as antologias ajudam a veicular essa representação de um século áureo da poesia portuguesa.Neste trabalho, caberá ainda uma reflexão sobre a importância das antologias, enquanto tipologia textual, no momento presente e o que lhes reservam os tempos futuros. Na verdade, a antologia, pela sua natureza de texto fragmentário está sujeita a diversas altera-ções, pois num tempo cada vez mais digital, o aparecimento do texto eletrónico pode pressupor certos tipos de leitura em detrimento de outros. Deste modo, a ambiguidade do texto an-tológico bem como a sua faceta multifuncional não constituem qualquer impedimento para que, no futuro, a antologia, enquanto tipologia textual, sobreviva no mundo moderno.Não poderia terminar esta dissertação sem uma reflexão sobre a importância das an-tologias enquanto livros singulares; não serão livros melhores do que os romances ou relatos de viagens ou diários ou biografias, mas são livros com uma dimensão muito especial, onde cabem outros livros e onde podemos regressar sempre sem remorsos de não os lermos no seu todo, mas apenas naquilo que nos seduz.
