Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function-Second Edition (BRIEF2): Estudos de Precisão com o método Teste-Reteste

Abstract

Executive functions play a crucial role in promoting mental and physical health, underpinning cognitive development, promoting social skills, and playing a prominent role in academic and professional success. In this context, the growing interest of research in this theme is justified, namely with regard to evaluation procedures, whether they are performance tests or behavioral inventories. The present study is part of the BRIEF2 validation project for the Portuguese population. Its main objective was to examine the accuracy of the instrument by testing its temporal stability using the Test-retest method. In a complementary study, the relationship between the results in the inventory and the academic performance of students was analyzed. The sample consists of 69 participants, of which 38 (55.1%) are male and 31 (44.9%) are female. They are distributed in the age groups of six to 18 years. The three versions of BRIEF2 (Parents, Teachers, and Self- Report) were used. Correlational analyses were performed using Pearson's correlation between the two applications for the different scales and indices that make up BRIEF2. The correlations between the different components of the inventory and the academic performance of the subjects in the disciplines of English, Mathematics and Portuguese were also calculated. The results show that the Portuguese version of BRIEF2 presents an excellent temporal stability, with correlations with very high magnitudes between the two applications (r values between .71 and .93). With regard to academic performance, our data show significant correlations in a spectrum of moderate to high magnitude (r values between -.32 and.-72)., varying according to the scales and the measure of academic performance taken as a reference.

As funções executivas desempenham um papel crucial na promoção da saúde mental e física, alicerçam o desenvolvimento cognitivo, promovem competências sociais e assumem um papel de destaque no sucesso académico e profissional. Neste contexto, justifica-se o crescente interesse da investigação por esta temática, nomeadamente no que se reporta aos procedimentos de avaliação, sejam eles testes de desempenho ou inventários comportamentais. O presente estudo faz parte do projeto de validação do BRIEF2 para a população portuguesa. O seu objetivo central foi o de examinar a precisão do instrumento, testando a sua estabilidade temporal através do método Teste-reteste. Num estudo complementar, analisou-se a relação entre os resultados no inventário e desempenho académico dos alunos. A amostra é composta por 69 participantes, dos quais 38 (55.1%) são do sexo masculino e 31 (44.9%) do sexo feminino. Distribuem-se pelas faixas etárias dos seis aos 18 anos. Utilizaram-se as três versões do BRIEF2 (Pais, Professores e Autorrelato). Foram realizadas análises correlacionais através da Correlação de Pearson entre as duas aplicações para as diferentes escalas e índices que integram o BRIEF2. Procedeu-se ainda ao cálculo das correlações entre as diferentes componentes do inventário e o desempenho académico dos sujeitos nas disciplinas de Inglês, Matemática e Português. Os resultados observados revelam que a versão portuguesa do BRIEF2 apresenta uma excelente estabilidade temporal, observando-se correlações com magnitudes muito altas entre as duas aplicações (valores de r entre .71 a .93). No que se reporta ao desempenho académico, os nossos dados demonstram correlações significativas num espetro de magnitude moderada a alta (valores de r entre -.32 a -.72), variando em função das escalas e da medida de rendimento académico tida como referência.
