Os impactos da Reprodução Medicamente Assistida nas relações conjugais

Abstract

Nowadays love has become the central feeling in life as a couple, children have come to be seen as the symbol of love between parents and, consequently, family dynamics have ended up changing. The evolution of the child's place within the family, the prioritization of loving feelings and the well-being of their own children, also resulted in a decline in fertility in Portugal, with fewer births having ever been recorded than today. However, the desires and expectations of fertility remain and, in some cases, the couple's decision to have children is hindered by biological reasons. It is crucial that we analyze infertility, not focusing solely and exclusively as a problem of biological origin but looking at the social issues it raises. This dissertation discusses the importance of the child's biological bond and its relevance within the family, analyzing the reasons that lead the couple to adopt medically assisted reproduction. It focuses on analyzing the impacts on the affective, material, and intimate dimensions of the marital relationship, and the way in which infertility treatments condition the marital relationship. The study is an exploratory work, carrying out a qualitative analysis using semi-directive interviews carried out with women with experience of Medically Assisted Reproduction (RMA) treatments. Empirical work points to a diverse web of impacts, in which support networks play a relevant role. The complexity of experiences conditions the couple's affection, sexuality, and intimacy, making it possible to observe a continuum ranging from an increase in the couple's intimacy and complicity to the breakdown of the marital relationship.

Atualmente, o amor passou a ser o sentimento central na vida a dois, os filhos passaram a ser vistos como o símbolo do amor entre os pais e, consequentemente, as dinâmicas familiares acabaram por se alterar. A evolução do lugar da criança no seio familiar, a priorização do sentimento amoroso e do bem-estar dos próprios filhos, resultou, também, no declínio da fecundidade em Portugal, nunca se tendo registado tão poucos nascimentos como atualmente. No entanto, os desejos e expetativas de fecundidade mantêm-se e, em alguns casos, a decisão do casal em ter filhos é barrada por questões biológicas. É crucial analisarmos a infertilidade, não a centrando única e exclusivamente como um problema de origem biológica, mas olhando para as questões sociais que coloca. Esta dissertação discute a importância do laço biológico da criança e a sua relevância no seio familiar, analisando os motivos que levam o casal a adotar a reprodução medicamente assistida. Centra-se na análise dos impactos nas dimensões afetiva, material e íntima na relação conjugal, e no modo como os tratamentos de infertilidade condicionam a relação conjugal. O estudo assume-se como um trabalho exploratório, realizando uma análise qualitativa com recurso a entrevistas semi-diretivas realizadas a mulheres com experiência de tratamentos de Reprodução Medicamente Assistida (RMA).O trabalho empírico aponta para uma teia diversa de impactos, na qual as redes de apoio têm um papel relevante. A complexidade das vivências condiciona a afetividade, a sexualidade e a intimidade do casal, sendo possível observar um continuum que vai do aumento da intimidade e cumplicidade do casal à rotura da relação conjugal.
