A Arqueologia Urbana em Santarém: um caso prático de reabilitação no Largo de São Julião

Abstract

This report is the result of the curricular internship carried out at the company ArqueoScallabis, Lda. (Santarém), as part of the 2nd Cycle of the Course in Archeology and Territory at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Coimbra, and is the final work selected by the master’s student to complete the course.Business Archeology is one of the areas with the highest employability rate after completing the Archeology study cycle. The decision to write this report took into account the need to familiarize myself with all the procedural, practical and methodological aspects of preventive archeology, namely in terms of accompaniment of construction work. It also comprised a way to consolidate the ability to apply, in a safe way, the theoretical knowledge acquired during the theoretical lectures of both the master’s degree and the licentiate’s degree that preceded it.The case study selected was the archaeological intervention carried out in Santarém - in Largo de S. Julião n.º 1 to 5 and Travessa das Capuchas n.º 1-11 - which aimed to minimize the possible heritage and archaeological impact resulting from the extension and requalification of a residential building.The work carried out by the master's student, who had the opportunity to accompany the process in all its phases, from the preliminary bibliographic collection work, through the excavation and accompanying of construction work, to the laboratory work of recording and processing the data and the exhumed remains, is presented here. This work was duly framed within the state of the art of archaeology in the city, and also made it possible to problematize certain aspects.This work showed that most of the contexts were already distorted and had little archaeological value The rare contexts that proved to have archaeological value allowed us to confirm or disprove certain theses established by previous authors regarding the chronology of occupation of this part of the city. The exhumed remains reveal a chronology of occupation from the Islamic period to the present day.Thus, this internship report also aims to contribute, albeit modestly, to increasing knowledge of this part of the city of Santarém, disseminating the results obtained, analyzing and problematizing the finds, and integrating them into the dynamics of occupation of this space.

O presente relatório é resultado do estágio curricular realizado na empresa ArqueoScallabis, Lda. (Santarém), realizado no âmbito do Curso de 2º Ciclo em Arqueologia e Território da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Coimbra, constituindo o trabalho final selecionado pelo mestrando para conclusão do mesmo.A Arqueologia Empresarial é uma das áreas com maior taxa de empregabilidade após o término do ciclo de estudos em Arqueologia. A decisão de elaborar o presente relatório teve em consideração a necessidade de familiarização com toda a parte processual, prática e metodologia em arqueologia preventiva, nomeadamente na vertente de acompanhamento em contexto de obra, compondo também uma forma de consolidar a capacidade de aplicação de forma segura dos conhecimentos teóricos adquiridos ao longo da vertente lectiva teórica, tanto do mestrado como da licenciatura que o precedeu.O caso de estudo selecionado foi a intervenção arqueológica realizada em Santarém - no Largo de S. Julião n.º 1 a 5 e Travessa das Capuchas nº 1-11 – que tinha por objectivo minimizar o possível impacte patrimonial e arqueológico decorrente da ampliação e requalificação de um edifício de habitação.Apresentam-se os trabalhos realizados pelo mestrando que teve a oportunidade de acompanhar o processo em todas as suas fases, desde os trabalhos prévios de recolha bibliográfica, passando pelos trabalhos de campo de escavação e acompanhamento, até à realização dos trabalhos de laboratório de registo e tratamento dos dados e do espólio exumado. Estes trabalhos foram devidamente enquadrados no estado de arte da arqueologia na cidade, permitindo também problematizar alguns aspectos. Estes trabalhos permitiram constatar que a maioria dos contextos se encontravam já deturpados e tinham pouco valor arqueológico. Os raros contextos que demonstraram ter valor arqueológico permitiram confirmar ou desmentir certas teses pré-estabelecidas por autores anteriores relativamente à cronologia de ocupação desta parte da cidade. O espólio exumado revela uma cronologia de ocupação do espaço desde o período Islâmico até à contemporaneidade.Assim, neste relatório de estágio propõe-se também contribuir, ainda que modestamente, para o acréscimo de conhecimento desta parcela da cidade de Santarém, divulgando os resultados obtidos, analisando e problematizando os achados, integrando-os nas dinâmicas de ocupação deste espaço.
