dc.description.abstract | Introduction: The use of social network sites (SNS) has increased during the COVID-19 pandemic, and a greater use of them is associated with a higher risk of developing eating disorders (EDs). Furthermore, it has been established that content centered on physical appearance (CCPA) on social media exhibits a strong association with Eds. It is important to understand whether this association is similar in the Portuguese population. Methods: A total of 242 Portuguese university students with ages ranging from 18 to 30 years old completed an online questionnaire about their SNS use and responded to a Portuguese adaptation of the Eating Attitudes Test-26 (EAT-26). The questionnaire assessed three temporal periods: before the pandemic, during the pandemic, and at the time of completing the questionnaire. Results: During the pandemic, a statistically significant increase was found in the average daily use of the four SNS assessed (Facebook, Youtube, Instagram and Tiktok) . Additionally, during the pandemic there was an increase in CCPA on Instagram, which included accounts focused on appearance, beauty, and body weight. In the post-pandemic period, there was a statistically significant decrease in these variables. Finally, a significant relationship was found between CCPA followed on Instagram and the risk of developing EDs.Discussion and conclusion: Results suggest that lockdown had an impact on SNS use in Portugal, and that this use, particularly CCPA present on SNS, is related to a higher prevalence of EDs. | eng |
