Avaliação da Produção Científica Portuguesa na Área da Medicina Geral e Familiar

Abstract

Introdução: A área de Medicina Geral e Familiar (MGF), à imagem das restantes especialidades médicas, apresenta um profundo e variado leque de opções no que toca à vertente da investigação, produção e publicação científica. Em Portugal, os estudos bibliométricos baseados em dados procedentes de publicações científicas, não são muito frequentes, mas são muitos importantes pois permitem conhecer a atividade de investigação e identificar as instituições, centros ou grupos ativos nessa área.Assim este estudo pretendeu analisar a produção científica dos médicos de MGF em Portugal, durante um período de 10 anos, compreendidos entre 2012 e 2022, o que permitiu ter uma visão abrangente sobre a publicação científica desenvolvida nesta área, bem como a sua evolução ao longo do período estudado.Métodos: Foram utilizados três recursos bibliográficos: a Web of Science Core Collection, para determinar o número de artigos e revistas onde foram publicados, assim como as citações que obtiveram, o Journal Citation Reports, de onde foi retirado o Fator de Impacto e o quartil das revistas, ambos da Clarivate Analytics e o Scimago Journal & Country Rank, que permitiu comparar os dados da publicação científica nacional na área de MGF com a de outros países europeus. Na Web of Science foi utilizada a seguinte expressão de pesquisa: “usf OR unidade de Saude Familiar OR centro de Saude OR ACeS OR medicina geral familiar OR Gen Practice Family) SAME Portugal” no campo Address e limitado de 2012 a 2022.Para esta comparação foi usado um conjunto de indicadores bibliométricos quantitativos e qualitativos. Os indicadores quantitativos foram o número de publicações ao longo dos anos; o número de artigos por tipologia, idioma, instituição, coautorias; a distribuição geográfica; e as áreas temáticas. Os indicadores qualitativos, como o fator de impacto, quartil das revistas e o número de citações obtidas, foram utilizados para investigar o impacto da produção científica.Resultados: Durante a década estudada foram publicados 389 artigos, com pelo menos um autor português, na área de MGF, que obtiveram um total de 5354 citações, o que dá uma média de 13,76 citações por artigo.Entre 2012 e 2022 verificou-se um crescimento de 21,67% da produção científica nacional na área que selecionámos.No entanto, quase metade dos documentos (43,2%) foram produzidos por apenas 10 autores.A coautoria é a regra na produção de artigos nesta área e Portugal não é exceção.Assim, observou-se que a maioria dos trabalhos publicados foram realizados em colaboração com Universidades, sendo a Universidade do Porto a que mais contribuiu para esta produção.Observou-se também que os artigos realizados em colaboração internacional foram os que tiveram um maior número de citações. Das citações registadas, 49,7% foram em apenas 3 publicações.A maioria das revistas onde os autores portugueses partilharam os seus artigos, pertenciam ao segundo quartil.Conclusão: A análise bibliométrica é um recurso credível para avaliar o desenvolvimento e a qualidade da produção científica. Observou-se uma tendência de investigação e publicação crescente e positiva na área de MGF.

Introduction: General Practice and Family Medicine, like other medical specialties, has a wide and varied range of options regarding research, production and scientific publication. In Portugal, bibliometric studies based on data from scientific publications are not very frequent, but they are very important as they allow knowing the research activity and identifying institutions, centers or groups active in this area.Thus, this study aims were to analyze the scientific production of Family Medicine physicians in Portugal over a period of 10 years, from 2012 to 2022, which will allow us to have a comprehensive view of the scientific activity developed in this area, as well as its evolution over the period studied.Methods: Three bibliographic resources were used: the Web of Science Core Collection, to determine the number of articles and journals where they were published, as well as the citations they obtained, the Journal Citation Reports, from which the Impact Factor and the quartile of the journals were taken, both from Clarivate Analytics, and the Scimago Journal & Country Rank, which allowed comparing data on national scientific publication in the area of Family Medicine with those from other European countries. In Web of Science the following search expression was used: "usf OR unidade de Saude Familiar OR centro de Saude OR ACeS OR medicina geral familiar OR Gen Practice Family) SAME Portugal" in the Address field and limited from 2012 to 2022.For this comparison a set of quantitative and qualitative bibliometric indicators were used. The quantitative indicators were the number of publications over the years; the number of articles by type, language, institution, co-authors; the geographical distribution; and the thematic areas. The qualitative indicators, such as the impact factor, journal quartile and the number of citations obtained, were used to investigate the impact of scientific production.Results: During the decade studied, 389 articles were published, with at least one Portuguese author, in the area of Family Medicine, which obtained a total of 5354 citations, giving an average of 13.76 citations per article.Between 2012 and 2022 there was a 21.67% growth in national scientific production in the area we selected.However, almost half of the documents (43.2%) were produced by only 10 authors.Co-authorship is the rule in the production of articles in this area and Portugal is no exception.Thus, it was observed that most of the papers published were carried out in collaboration with Universities, with the University of Porto being the one that most contributed to this production.It was also observed that the articles carried out in international collaboration were those with the highest number of citations. Of the citations registered, 49.7% were in only 3 publications.Most of the journals where Portuguese authors shared their articles belonged to the second quartile.Conclusion: Bibliometric analysis is a credible resource to assess the development and quality of scientific production. An increasing and positive research and publication trend was observed in the area of Family Medicine.
