Viagem ao centro histórico de Coimbra: dos processos de reabilitação, requalificação e regeneração ao reconhecimento como Património Mundial da UNESCO

Abstract

Having completed a decade since the recognition of the University of Coimbra – Alta and Sofia as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in the 2013 Session, to which an addendum was made in 2019 to include another item to the already 30 building complexes inscribed in it, we draw a multidimensional portrait of the Historic Centre of the city of Coimbra, in its two interdependent parts of Alta and Baixa, respectively the royal and university acropolis and its immediate outskirts, its first suburb, analysing the relationship between the World Heritage inscription and the intentions and aspirations of rehabilitation, requalification and urban regeneration and revitalization interventions in process in this operational space. This outlines a consistent situation for the proper analytical understanding of this iconic and symbolic place in the context of the largest city in the Centro Region, Coimbra, a medium-sized city on a Portuguese scale, but still deeply relevant in the national context, as its first royal capital and for having its oldest university, the University of Coimbra, founded at the end of the 13th century and in Coimbra from 1308 onwards, anchoring it as a historical and intellectual centre of the first order in the Portuguese context and in the Portuguese-speaking world and European scenarios. The aim of this dissertation is to evaluate the operational and functional dialogue established by this historical and heritage context with the rest of the city, analysing various material and immaterial dimensions that define, implement and describe the Historic Centre of Coimbra and the World Heritage Site that comprises it.

Ao cumprir-se uma década do reconhecimento do bem Universidade de Coimbra – Alta e Sofia como Património Mundial da UNESCO, em sessão de 2013, e ao qual foi feita uma adenda em 2019 para incluir outro edifício aos já 30 complexo edificados que o constituem, traça-se um retrato multidimensional do Centro Histórico da cidade de Coimbra, nos seus dois núcleos complementares da Alta e da Baixa, respectivamente a acrópole real e universitária e o seu arrabalde, o seu primeiro subúrbio, analisando a relação da inscrição do bem com as pulsões e pretensões de reabilitação, de requalificação e de regeneração e revitalização urbana em processo neste espaço tópico e operativo. Traça-se assim um ponto de situação consequente para a devida compreensão analítica deste lugar icónico e simbólico no contexto da maior cidade da Região Centro, Coimbra, cidade média à escala portuguesa, mas ainda assim profundamente relevante no contexto nacional, por ser a sua primeira capital real e por ter a sua mais antiga universidade, a Universidade de Coimbra, fundada no final do Séc. XIII e estabelecida a espaços em Coimbra a partir de 1308, ancorando-a como núcleo histórico e intelectual de primeira ordem no contexto português e nos cenários lusófono e europeu. Pretende-se avaliar o diálogo operativo e funcional estabelecido por este riquíssimo contexto histórico e patrimonial com a restante cidade, analisando diversas dimensões materiais e imateriais que definem, concretizam e descrevem o Centro Histórico de Coimbra e o bem Património Mundial que o integra.
