Afinidades no Ocidente Mediterrâneo: uma leitura das paisagens pela lente dos sistemas de elevação de água tradicionais

Abstract

Given the geographical proximity of the Iberian Peninsula and the Maghreb, some authors and scholars of the Mediterranean world believe that there is a cultural continuity between the peoples of these places (RIBEIRO, 1998: 25). The unity in some historical periods, the similar environment and the recurrent movement of people, goods and information may have provided a shared culture between the peoples of these regions, although the political-religious circumstances of recent centuries have contributed to the gradual fading of this proximity. This research is centred on the study of the hydraulic landscapes of the Western Mediterranean, through irrigation water lifting systems. The landscape is an expression of the past in which a set of marks and symbols of anthropic origin are aggregated, which were bequeathed by previous communities and which allow us to understand their culture. By studying the landscape from the perspective of hydraulic systems and their impacts, it is possible to understand the social and cultural values of the societies responsible for their implementation, since these are reflected in the ways in which the systems are used and administered and in the very structuring of the landscape that results from their use. It is therefore important to study these elements in order to understand how the irrigated landscapes of the western Mediterranean were conceived and developed. This dissertation aims to answer the question: Are there affinities in the irrigated landscapes on both sides of the western Mediterranean?

Dada a proximidade geográfica da Península Ibérica e do Magreb, alguns autores, estudiosos do mundo mediterrâneo, acreditam haver uma continuidade cultural entre os povos destes locais (RIBEIRO, 1998: 25). A unidade em alguns períodos históricos, o ambiente semelhante e o recorrente movimento de pessoas, bens e informações poderão ter proporcionado uma cultura partilhada entre os povos destas regiões, muito embora as circunstâncias político-religiosas dos últimos séculos tenham contribuído para o gradual desvanecimento desta proximidade. A presente investigação centra-se no estudo das paisagens hidráulicas do Ocidente Mediterrâneo, através dos sistemas de elevação de água de rega. A paisagem constitui uma expressão do passado onde se encontram agregados um conjunto de marcas e símbolos de origem antrópica, que foram legados por comunidades anteriores e que permitem perceber a sua cultura. Ao estudar a paisagem a partir dos sistemas hidráulicos e dos seus impactos, é possível compreender os valores sociais e culturais das sociedades responsáveis pela sua implantação, uma vez que estes se encontram refletidos nos modos de utilização e administração dos sistemas e na própria estruturação da paisagem que decorre da sua utilização. Assim, torna-se pertinente estudar estes elementos de forma a compreender como foram pensadas e desenvolvidas as paisagens irrigadas do Ocidente Mediterrâneo. Deste modo, a presente dissertação pretenderá responder à pergunta: Existem afinidades nas paisagens irrigadas dos dois lados do Ocidente Mediterrâneo?
