Representação Mental da Família de Adolescentes em Acolhimento Residencial

Abstract

A manutenção da ligação à família é uma necessidade identificada entre adolescentes que foram retirados à sua família e colocados em acolhimento residencial. Ainda que o acolhimento tenha como finalidade a proteção e a segurança destes adolescentes, para muitos a passagem pelo acolhimento residencial é marcada pela idealização da família e pelo desejo de reunificação com ela. Este estudo, de natureza qualitativa, tem como objetivo conhecer o significado do conceito de família para estes adolescentes, através da evocação de memórias prévias ao acolhimento residencial, bem como da compreensão das suas expetativas face à família durante e após a saída do acolhimento residencial. Neste estudo, participaram nove adolescentes em acolhimento residencial, de ambos os sexos, com idades compreendidas entre os 13 e os 20 anos, com um mínimo de nove meses em acolhimento residencial. As narrativas produzidas através das entrevistas foram analisadas seguindo a metodologia da Análise Temática.Os principais resultados deste estudo colocam em evidência que os adolescentes em acolhimento residencial apresentam, maioritariamente, representações negativas dos progenitores, pautadas por sentimentos de rejeição, distanciamento e rutura. Estes adolescentes são capazes de olhar criticamente para as vivências com a família biológica, integrando-as na sua estória de vida. Para estes, o conceito de família não surge circunscrito à família biológica, mas também a outros cuidadores que se assumiram como figuras fundamentais na sua vida. Assim, a família surge, essencialmente, associada a uma dimensão relacional, onde prevalecem vínculos seguros e significativos. Considerando estes resultados, foi possível perceber que a família é um conceito fluxo e ambíguo, intimamente ligado à estória de vida de um sujeito.Este estudo, pretende promover um olhar atento sobre esta temática, potenciando novas investigações que permitam compreender e analisar com maior detalhe as narrativas de vida de crianças e adolescentes em acolhimento residencial. Conhecer as expectativas destes adolescentes e crianças relativamente à sua família, pode revelar-se útil para a conceção de formas de intervenção que favoreçam a adaptação ao acolhimento e a transição futura para a vida autónoma.

The maintenance of the connection with the family is a recognized need among adolescents who have been removed from their families and placed in residential care. Even though the purpose of residential care is to provide protection and safety for these adolescents, for many of them, their time in the institution is marked by the idealization of their family and the desire for reunification with it. This qualitative study aims to understand the meaning of the concept of family for these adolescents through the recollection of memories prior to institutionalization and the comprehension of their expectations regarding family after leaving the institution. Nine adolescents in residential care, aged between 13 and 20 years old, with a minimum of nine months in residential care, participated in this study. The narratives produced through interviews were analyzed using the Thematic Analysis methodology.The main results of this study highlight that adolescents in residential care predominantly have negative representations of their parents, marked by feelings of rejection, distance, and rupture. These adolescents are capable of critically examining their experiences with their biological family and integrating them into their life story. For these adolescents, the concept of family does not only pertain to the biological family but also to other caregivers who have assumed crucial roles in their lives. Thus, family primarily emerges as a relational dimension characterized by secure and meaningful bonds. Considering these results, it was possible to understand that family is a fluid and ambiguous concept, intimately connected to an individual’s life story.This study aims to promote a closer examination of this topic, encouraging further research that allows for a more detailed understanding and analysis of the life narratives of children and adolescents in residential care. Understanding the expectations of these adolescents and children regarding their family can be valuable for designing interventions that support their adaptation to residential care and their future transition to independent life.
