. Expectations regarding therapy are one of the most important factors for the success of the therapeutic process. By studying the social representations of couple therapy, it is possible to understand opinions, beliefs, and feelings within a given population. Thus, the aim of this study is to assess the social representations of couples therapy in the Portuguese population and analyze them according to gender, age group, education level, residential environment, and civil status. Responses from 2417 participants were collected, and through the Free Word Association Method, it was possible to construct a Four Houses Matrix reflecting the social representation of couples therapy in the study sample. The elements evoked in the central core of this social representation were: "help," "communication," "problem," "necessary," "conflict," "discussion," "useless," "therapy," "reconciliation," "important," and "health." The dimensions of motives for seeking couples therapy and expectations regarding the therapeutic process are central elements present across all sociodemographic groups. While most beliefs associated with couples therapy are positive, there is a minority that considers it useless. This group is less likely to seek support in this regard; therefore, it is important to reduce the stigma surrounding couples therapy so that more individuals feel encouraged to benefit from this resource. . |
