Trabalhos de Antropologia e Etnologia: o movimento eugênico português a partir da perspectiva da antropologia histórica (1900-1930)

Abstract

O presente estudo pretende compartilhar, com a comunidade acadêmica, alguns exemplos de fontes primárias que vêm sendo utilizadas no desenvolvimento de uma tese de doutorado em História Contemporânea, na Universidade de Coimbra, a respeito da Sociedade Portuguesa de Antropologia e Etnologia e suas relações com o incipiente movimento eugênico no início do século XX. Desde o final do século XIX, multiplicaram-se em todo o mundo sociedades, institutos e agremiações que estabeleceram redes de colaborações internacionais em diversos ramos da ciência - na Antropologia não foi diferente. Compreender as ações dessas agências confundese com a própria antropologia histórica, e com a importância daqueles que, mesmo não sendo antropólogos em suas formações, contribuíram direta ou indiretamente para sua institucionalização. Seguindo nosso Plano de Trabalho, o foco deste artigo consiste em uma análise de caráter tanto quantitativo como qualitativo do periódico “Trabalhos da Sociedade Portuguesa de Antropologia e Etnologia” (assim designado entre o volume I de 1919 e o volume X de 1945, depois do qual passou a nomear-se por Trabalhos de Antropologia e Etnologia - TAE), entre os anos de 1919-1928. Procurou-se no decorrer dessa investigação estabelecer possíveis relações da eugenia portuguesa com outros países, inclusive com o Brasil, que já em 1918 inaugurava a Sociedade Eugênica de São Paulo, sob a liderança do importante eugenista limeirense Renato Ferraz Kehl, o qual mantinha relações com diversas sociedades científicas internacionais, inclusive em Portugal.

This paper aims to share with the academic community some examples of primary sources that have been being used in the development of a Doctorate thesis on Contemporary History, in Coimbra University, about the Portuguese Society of Anthropology and Ethnology and its relations with the incipient eugenic movement at the beginning of the 20th century. Since the end of the 19th century, there was a multiplication of societies, institutes and associations that established collaborative networks in several fields of science worldwide – it was not different with Anthropology. Understanding the acts of these agencies blends with historical anthropology itself, and with the importance of those that, even not being graduated anthropologists, have contributed directly or indirectly to its institutionalization. Following the research plan, the paper focuses on a both qualitative and quantitative analysis of the journal “Works by the Portuguese Society of Anthropology and Ethnology” (between volume I from 1919 and volume X from 1945, after which it started being called as “Anthropology and Ethnology Works – TAE), between the years 1919 and 1928. This investigation has sought to establish possible relations between the Portuguese eugenics and other countries, including Brazil, which inaugurated in 1918 the São Paulo Eugenic Society, under the leading of an important eugenist from the city of Limeira, Renato Ferraz Kehl, who maintained bonds with several international scientific societies, including from Portugal.
