dc.description.abstract | Single Document Prepared Consisting of three parts: Internship Report in Community Pharmacy, Internship Report in Research at the Microbiology Laboratory of the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Coimbra entitled “Assessment of the Antibacterial Activity of Drug-1 and Drug-2 in Acinetobacter baumannii ” and Epidemiology of Carbapenemases in Portugal from a “One Health” Perspective.Carbapenems are a class of ß-lactams antibiotics (ATBs) that inhibit the cell wall formation. Its use in the past decades, gave time to the bacteria to develop resistance mechanisms such as carbapenemases activity. These enzymes can be classified by a classification system proposed by Ambler, where are presented in classes A, B e D. In classes A and D, the carbapenemases have serine in their active site and in class B one or two zinc ions. Considering class A, their most important carbapenemases are IMI/NMC-A, SME, SFC-1, KPC e GES, in class B, the respective carbapenemases are NDM-1, IMP e VIM and in class D, they are the carbapenemases that belong to the OXA family. These classes of carbapenemases are most commonly found in some specific species of bacteria such as Acinetobacter baumannii, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. These carbapenemase-producing bacteria have been gaining special attention from different organizations around the world. World Health Organization (WHO), Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and European Center for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC) have been developing strategies with the goal to overcome this public health problem and reduce its impact in the populations affected by this concern. | eng |
