O culto à Rainha Santa Isabel e a construção da identidade sourense

Abstract

In 1628, the Third Order of Saint Francis settled in the village of Soure. Later, in 1641, a chapel is dedicated to Saint Elizabeth of Portugal. The purposes of this work are to understand the Elizabethan cult in Soure and the importance of the Holy Queen for the inhabitants of the village and the county, the way in which pilgrims form identities and how the pilgrimage or the belief in the Holy Queen unites the people of Soure and makes them a community. To this end, we accompanied the work of the Irmandade de São Francisco e da Rainha Santa Isabel [Brotherhood of Saint Francis and the Holy Queen], using the method of participant observation.The Holy Queen is an aggregating figure and a uniting factor between the inhabitants of the village of Soure, namely downtown and uptown, but also the town and the other villages of the county. It is around the Holy Queen, especially during the festivities and very specifically during the processions (night and day), that people who travel to Soure or who live there gather. With different motivations, they participate in the cult and manifest their devotion in different ways. The promotion of flower carpets has aroused the interest of the municipality in the patrimonialization and touristification of the festivities in honour of the Saint, which until recently have had a mainly religious character, contrary to what happens with the municipality festivities, in honour of Saint Mathew, during which the annual fair and profane events take place.This work comes to the conclusion that the people of Soure consider themselves united by the Holy Queen, which does not happen in any other social, cultural and religious context in Soure, so we conclude that the Sourense identity is built from the Elizabethan cult.

Em 1628, a Ordem Terceira de São Francisco instalou-se na vila de Soure, tendo sido devotada uma capela à Rainha Santa Isabel em 1641. Os objetivos deste trabalho são compreender o culto isabelino em Soure e a importância da Rainha Santa para os habitantes da vila e do concelho, o modo como os peregrinos formam identidades e como é que a peregrinação ou a crença na Rainha Santa une as pessoas de Soure e as torna uma comunidade. Para tal, acompanhámos os trabalhos da Irmandade de São Francisco e da Rainha Santa Isabel, tendo sido adotado o método da observação participante. A Rainha Santa Isabel é uma figura agregadora e um fator de união entre os habitantes da vila de Soure, nomeadamente da baixa e da alta, mas também da vila e das aldeias do concelho. É em torno da Rainha Santa, principalmente durante as festas e muito especificamente durante as procissões (a noturna e a diurna), que se unem as pessoas que se deslocam a Soure ou que lá residem. Levando diferentes motivações, participam no culto e manifestam a sua devoção de modos distintos. A promoção dos tapetes de flores tem despertado o interesse da autarquia em patrimonializar e turistificar as festas em honra da Santa, as quais até recentemente têm tido um carácter sobretudo religioso, ao contrário do que acontece com as festas do concelho, em honra de São Mateus, durante as quais decorrem a feira anual e eventos de cariz profano. Este trabalho conclui que os sourenses se consideram unidos pela Rainha Santa Isabel, o que não acontece em nenhum outro contexto social, cultural e religioso em Soure, pelo que concluímos que a identidade sourense se constrói a partir do culto isabelino.
