dc.description.abstract | ABSTRACT Introduction: Apical periodontitis is an infection of endodontic origin, responsible for the development of an inflammatory state. When it appears at a systemic level, chronic inflammation can trigger the onset of several diseases. Bearing in mind that inflammatory mediators lead to endothelial dysfunction, so that, it plays a central role in atherosclerosis, the main cause of coronary heart disease, it can be stated that inflammation such as apical periodontitis may provide a favorable environment for the development of associated mechanisms to cardiovascular diseases. Objective: The present narrative review of the literature aims to assess the prevalence of apical periodontitis in patients with cardiovascular disease.Materials and methods: A search was carried out in the Medline via Pubmed, Web of Science Core Collection and Embase databases, with articles published between 2012 and 2022, in English and Spanish, using a key consisting of MeSH terms, and 36 articles were found. Results: After applying the inclusion criteria, 22 articles were selected for analysis. After analyzing these articles, it was effectively verified a higher prevalence of apical periodontitis in patients with cardiovascular pathologies, which can be considered a risk factor for the development of these pathologies. Conclusion: We can conclude that although there are associations between apical periodontitis and the development of various cardiovascular diseases, further longitudinal and epidemiological studies are needed on this topic. Keywords: Cardiovascular Diseases; Apical Periodontitis; Systematic Review of literature. | eng |
