Narrativas populistas de direita: Emoções, valores e o papel da família

Abstract

Tanto na Europa, como em Portugal, o populismo de extrema-direita tem-se expandido. Considerada uma estratégia ou estilo político que postula uma relação antagónica entre povo (in-group) e elite (out-group), há alguma evidência empírica que reporta a associação entre populismo e emoções, maioritariamente negativas, e populismo e valores políticos. Além disso, investigações focadas no processo de socialização política têm apontado para o papel importante da família no envolvimento político. Desta forma, o presente estudo pretende contribuir para a investigação sobre o populismo, procurando compreender o papel das emoções, dos valores e do sistema familiar no envolvimento político ativo em partidos de direita em Portugal, o CHEGA e o Partido do Centro Democrático Social – Partido Popular (CDS-PP). Trata-se de um estudo qualitativo que contempla a análise temática de 10 entrevistas semiestruturadas a pessoas politicamente ativas e com representação partidária. Dos resultados surgiram as seguintes categorias (1) Emoções, (2) Valores, (3) Impacto no indivíduo e (4) Estratégias de autoapresentação. Em relação às subcategorias, destacam-se as seguintes: (1) Raiva, (2) Descontentamento com o panorama político, (3) Anticorrupção/Contra-sistema e (4) Patriotismo. Deste modo, é possível concluir que as emoções negativas contra o sistema e a elite corrupta e o patriotismo, parecem estar fortemente associadas ao populismo de extrema-direita em Portugal. O sistema familiar também apresenta um papel relevante, já que tanto demonstrou influenciar o envolvimento político dos participantes, como ser influenciado por este.

Both in Europe and in Portugal, far-right populism has expanded. Considered a political ideology that postulates an antagonistic relationship between people (in-group) and elite (out-group), there is some empirical evidence that reports the association between populism and emotions, mostly negative, and populism and political values. In addition, investigations focused on the process of political socialization have pointed to the important role of the family in political involvement. In this way, the present study aims to contribute to the research about populism, by understanding the role of emotions, values, and the family system in active political involvement in right-wing parties CHEGA and CDS-People’s Party. The present investigation is a qualitative study that includes the thematic analysis of 10 semi-structured interviews with politically active people with partisan representation. The following categories emerged from the results: (1) Emotions, (2) Values, (3) Impact on the individual and (4) Self-presentation strategies. Regarding the subcategories, the following standout: (1) Anger/Revolt, (2) Discontent with the political landscape, (3) Anti-corruption/Anti-system and (4) Patriotism. Thus, it is possible to conclude that negative emotions against the system and the corrupt elite, and patriotism seem to be strongly associated with far-right populism in Portugal. The family system also plays an important role, as it has shown both to influence the political involvement of the participants and to be influenced by it.
