Pela mão do Infante D. Pedro: pensamento político e dinâmicas de poder no Portugal tardo-medieval

Abstract

Nesta dissertação lança-se um olhar sobre alguns dos aspetos da vida, obra e atuação política do Infante D. Pedro e a relação entre eles e o definir da «realidade política» tardo-medieval portuguesa, revolvendo a análise sobre aspetos do pensamento político coevo e das dinâmicas de poder observadas no período em questão. Num registo parcialmente ensaístico, os três “principais” capítulos (III, IV e V), versando sobre assuntos diversos, convergem na figura deste membro da «Ínclita Geração» e no desiderato de compreender os mecanismos do fenómeno político e o papel dos mesmos no contexto da evolução histórica. Assim, após apresentarmos a vida e pessoa do Infante num breve percurso biográfico e de o posicionarmos no panorama político-filosófico com recurso a um capítulo sobre as Ordenações Afonsinas e o tomismo, debruçamo-nos sobre o conceito de «consenso político», detetando a sua utilização na obra do Infante, indagando sobre a sua verificabilidade no concreto processo da atribuição da regência após a morte de D. Duarte, relacionando-o com o fenómeno de centralização do poder régio. A exposição prossegue depois com o exame do discurso oficial, concretamente o dimanado da Chancelaria régia. Aí assume especial importância a análise ao léxico utilizado, às fórmulas discursivas, buscando desvendar «lógicas de poder» no «discurso legitimador» da «ação de poder». Neste passo, também o aspeto formal-procedimental assume importância na tentativa de compreender como a realidade política se constrói a partir da produção do aparato burocrático régio. Finalmente, olhamos o papel do «ritual-simbólico» no percurso pessoal e político de D. Pedro. O Infante das Sete Partidas, que percorreu no seu famoso périplo algumas das cortes europeias mais faustosas e experimentadas no “bien faire” áulico, serviu-se do que conhecera e experimentara para atingir objetivos, enviar mensagens, garantir continuidades – promovendo também nesse campo uma renovação de sensibilidades e influenciando a construção da realidade política.

This dissertation takes a look at some of the aspects of the life, work and political activity of Infante D. Pedro and the relationship between them and the definition of the late-medieval Portuguese «political reality», with the analysis revolving around aspects of contemporary political thought and the power dynamics observed in the period in question. In a partially essayistic register, the three “main” chapters (III, IV and V), dealing with different subjects, converge in the figure of this member of the «Ínclita Geração» and in the desideratum of understanding the mechanisms of the political phenomenon and their role in the context of historical evolution. Thus, after presenting the life and person of Infante in a brief biographical journey and positioning him in the political-philosophical panorama using a chapter on the Afonsine Ordinances and Thomism, we focus on the concept of «political consensus», detecting the its use in the work of the Infante, inquiring about its verifiability in the concrete process of attribution of the regency after the death of D. Duarte, relating it to the phenomenon of centralization of royal power. The exposition then proceeds with an examination of the official discourse, specifically that emanating from the Royal Chancellery. There, the analysis of the lexicon used, the discursive formulas, takes on special importance, seeking to unveil «logics of power» in the «legitimizing discourse» of the «action of power». In this step, the formal-procedural aspect also assumes importance in the attempt to understand how the political reality is built from the production of the royal bureaucratic apparatus. Finally, we look at the role of the «symbolic-ritual» in the personal and political path of D. Pedro. The Infante das Sete Partidas, who in his famous travels visited some of the most sumptuous and experienced European courts in the Aulic “bien faire”, used what he had learned and experienced to achieve goals, send messages, guarantee continuities – also promoting in this field a renewal of sensitivities and influencing the construction of political reality.
