Tradução e museologia: comparação entre textos para museus geológicos, etnológicos, históricos e um museu histórico-tecnológico e interativo

Abstract

Resumo No presente Relatório de Estágio é exposta a experiência adquirida durante o estágio curricular de tradução realizado na Câmara Municipal de Cantanhede, no âmbito do Mestrado em Tradução pela Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Coimbra. O estágio foi concretizado junto da Divisão de Cultura, Desporto e Turismo e realizaram se traduções para entidades museológicas e culturais inseridas na Rede de Museus Municipais. A realização de traduções para estas entidades permitiu uma consciencialização e adaptação a algumas caraterísticas próprias dos textos traduzidos para cada uma das instituições, nomeadamente ao nível da própria redação dos textos e do registo utilizado, assim como da linguagem técnica aplicada. Estas particularidades e diferenças deram origem ao tema principal deste relatório e ao método de estudo usado. Realizou se um estudo de caso partindo da comparação entre textos para museus geológicos, etnológicos e históricos, e para um museu histórico tecnológico e interativo. Foram realizadas traduções de textos para panfletos, para exposições interativas, para vídeos que podem ser visualizados num dos museus ou no canal de YouTube desse mesmo museu, para um discurso político e para candidaturas a prémios. Naturalmente, para todas estas traduções de natureza tão variada, foram necessárias competências de tradução que vão para além dos conhecimentos linguísticos e terminológicos necessários. Para a realização das traduções destes textos, foram respeitadas as diretivas dadas pela orientadora de estágio e pelos curadores das entidades museológicas e culturais, assim como por outros representantes da Câmara Municipal de Cantanhede. A par da adoção destas indicações dos agentes da encomenda de tradução, as teorias funcionalistas e de invisibilidade do tradutor permitiram resolver de forma eficiente e adequada os diferentes problemas de tradução presentes nos textos fonte fornecidos pela entidade de acolhimento, e que variaram substancialmente na sua natureza. Para além deste estudo de caso, foram analisados com mais pormenor os textos para o Museu LOAD ZX Spectrum, e todas as particularidades registadas aquando das suas traduções. Com efeito, este museu continha vídeos e outros elementos não verbais que influenciaram a orientação dada à tradução. A sua temática contemporânea e a perspetiva dialogante com o visitante inscritas no texto fonte forneceram ainda mais algumas especificidades que não só distinguiram estes textos, como facilitaram a sua tradução.

Abstract This Report presents the experience acquired during my curricular internship at the Cantanhede City Council, as part of my Translation Master’s, from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Coimbra. The internship was carried out at the Culture Division. I translated texts for the museum and cultural entities that are part of the Network of Municipal Museums. The translations carried out for these entities allowed for the rise in awareness and adaptation to some of the characteristics and peculiarities present in the texts translated for each of the institutions. Namely in terms of the actual wording and register used in the texts, as well as the technical language used. These peculiarities and discrepancies resulted in the creation of the main subject of this Report, and of the explored study method: a case study where a comparison is established between texts for the geological, ethnological, and historical museums, and for a historical, technological, and interactive museum. Texts for flyers, interactive exhibits, YouTube videos and museum televisions, a speech and an award application were translated. For all of these translations certain skills were required, and these translation skills go way beyond the necessary linguistic or terminological knowledge. In order to make these translations, I took into account: the directives given by my host entity advisor and the curators of the museums and cultural entities, as well as the guidelines given by other representatives of the Cantanhede City Council. Along with the use of these guidelines provided by the translation commission initiator, a theoretical foundation based on the functionalist theories was used and the theory of the translator’s invisibility was explored, allowing for a more efficient and adequate means of solving the various and greatly different translation problems that were present in the source texts provided by the host entity. In addition to this case study, the texts for the LOAD ZX Spectrum Museum were analysed in more detail, and all the peculiarities noted during the completion of the translations were explored as well. As a result, this museum had video format content as well as other non verbal elements available, which influenced the way the translations were carried out. Its’ contemporary thematic and dialogic perspective with the visitor that were infused in the source texts gave me some more specificities that not only separated these texts from the rest, but they also made their translations easier.
