O I Milénio a.C. na Bacia do Médio e Baixo Vouga. Sítios Ocupados e Cultura Material

Abstract

A presente dissertação pretende contribuir para o estudo da ocupação humana na bacia do Médio e Baixo Vouga durante o I milénio a.C. Não obstante a existência de outros tipos de evidência arqueológica (e.g. contextos funerários e arte rupestre), optou-se por focar a análise na implantação e estruturação dos sítios ocupados e nas diversas categorias da cultura material (cerâmicas, metalurgia do bronze, ourivesaria, entre outros), procurando traçar, na medida do possível, uma perspetiva diacrónica desde o Bronze Final até aos primeiros momentos da presença romana neste território. Trata-se de uma região cuja importância durante a Proto-história se encontra atestada desde longa data pelos sítios emblemáticos que nela figuram, tais como o Castro da Senhora da Guia e o Castro da Cárcoda, no interior, e o Cabeço do Vouga e o Castro de Romariz, no litoral. A existência de um volume considerável de dados arqueológicos reunidos ao longo dos anos justificava uma necessária abordagem de conjunto, apesar desses dados serem muitas vezes ambíguos, desconexos e impeditivos de uma análise consubstanciada que só um plano de investigação de maior fôlego poderia promover. Neste sentido, o trabalho que ora se apresenta tem como principal objetivo realizar o levantamento e a sistematização da vasta informação dispersa na bibliografia, procurando produzir uma base de dados coerente, rigorosa e atualizada dos sítios ocupados e dos materiais produzidos e manipulados pelas comunidades que habitaram esta região durante o I milénio a.C. e, ao mesmo tempo, discutir as principais problemáticas inerentes ao seu estudo.

The present dissertation aims to contribute to the study of human occupation in the Middle and Lower Vouga basin during the 1st millennium BC. Despite the existence of other types of archaeological evidence (e.g. funerary contexts and rock art), we have chosen to focus on the analysis of the implantation and structuring of occupied sites and on the various categories of material culture (pottery, bronze metallurgy, goldsmithery, among others), trying to provide a diachronic perspective ranging from the Late Bronze Age to the first moments of the Roman presence in this territory. This is a region whose importance during Protohistory has long been attested by its emblematic sites, such as Castro da Senhora da Guia and Castro da Cárcoda, inland, and Cabeço do Vouga and Castro de Romariz, near the coast. The existence of a considerable amount of archaeological data gathered over the years justified the need for a global approach, despite the fact that these data were often ambiguous, disconnected and prevented a substantiated analysis that only a long term research plan could promote. The main objective of the work presented here is to survey, review and systematize the vast information scattered in the bibliography, seeking to produce a coherent, rigorous and up-to-date database of the occupied sites and the materials produced and manipulated by the communities that inhabited this region during the 1st millennium B.C. and, at the same time, to discuss the main problems inherent to its study.
