O Peso do Passado em Conversas sobre Cavalo Dinheiro (2014), de Pedro Costa: (Re)Formulação e (Re)Produção do Discurso Racista e Colonialista através de “Novas” Estratégias Discursivas

Abstract

A longa-metragem Cavalo Dinheiro (2014) de Pedro Costa mergulha nas lembranças, delírios e pesadelos de Ventura, para falar de uma geração de cabo-verdianos que deixou a sua terra natal e imigrou para Lisboa em perseguição de uma vida melhor, e que perdeu a juventude, a saúde e por vezes morreu, tentando atingir esse sonho. Como dialogam jovens portugueses brancos com as representações identitárias do “Outro” africano propostas pela obra? Qual a relação que se desenvolve com um filme que questiona discursos vigentes sobre a história, as expressões simbólicas e a identidade portuguesa? O filme foi mostrado e discutido em universidades do norte de Portugal, com alunos de licenciatura em Teatro e Comunicação. Apresenta-se uma leitura do filme seguida do resultado dessas conversas, numa análise de caráter crítico discursivo, que desvela a persistência de estereótipos racistas e a reprodução de discurso colonialista.

Pedro Costa’s feature film Horse Money (2014) delves into Ventura’s memories, delusions and nightmares, to speak about a generation of Cape Verdeans who left their homeland and emigrated to Lisbon in the pursuit of a better life, and lost their youth, their health and sometimes died, trying to achieve that dream. How do young Portuguese dialogue with the identity representations of the African “Other” proposed by the Film? What is the relationship that they develop with a film that questions current discourses about history, symbolic expressions, and Portuguese identity? The film was shown and discussed in central and northern universities in Portugal, with undergraduate students in Theater and Communication. We present a reading of the film and then the result of these conversations, in a critical discursive analysis, that reveals the persistence of racist stereotypes, as well the reproduction of colonialist discourse.
