The aversion to, disinterest in or even avoidance of mathematics that takes place in Angola and in many other countries, harms the development of young people and of the country. In this thesis we intend to analyse to what extent Ethnomathematics (incorporating cultural elements in the mathematics class, even if these elements have “hidden” or “frozen” mathematics) can allow addressing this issue in southern Angola, more specifically in the province of Cuando-Cubango where a large part of the Ngangela people are located. Thus, the following research questions were posed: • Which artefacts of the Ngangela ethnic group might have “frozen” Mathematics? • Which mathematical concepts can we identify in selected cultural artefacts of the Ngangela ethnic group? • What methodology can we follow to incorporate cultural artefacts with links to mathematical concepts in mathematics teaching? • Could the proposed tasks with which it is intended to integrate the cultural artefacts of the Ngangela ethnic group into the school have a positive impact on the perceptions and motivation of students and teachers? It is intended, with this ethnomathematical study, to reveal the value and beauty or the enormous wealth of mathematics that is “hidden” in cultural artefacts of the Ngangela ethnic group, to value the local potential that these people have in relation to mathematics in construction and/or making the same artefacts, using them to change the perception, both among students and in the general population, about the relevance of mathematics in everyday life. An investigation was carried out in 3 phases that allowed the identification of 13 Ngangela cultural elements with mathematics that can be “unfrozen” and present a sufficiently large potential of wealth to be used in the mathematics class to enhance the study of classic and usual mathematical themes in school programs, at the same time that it motivates and arouses interest in students and teachers in the study of a mathematics that, after all, is secularly linked to reality. The study developed in more detail the analysis and exploration of 3 artefacts (mortar, basket, javelin), which included the creation of tasks aimed at (or directed at) primary and secondary students in Cuando-Cubango. The tasks created were analysed or revised by a group of mathematics teachers from the Ngangela ethnic group, who teach in primary and secondary education. The latest version of the tasks was applied to students in the 3rd year of post-labour graduation from the Mathematics Teaching course at the Cuando-Cubango Pedagogical School of Cuito Cuanavale University, in order to verify their compatibility and didactic relevance. The study followed an interpretive, ethnographic methodology, based on case studies, and was designed to be able to answer the research questions. In this study participated the artisans from the Ngangela ethnic group; the officials of the Provincial Culture of Cuando-Cubango; primary, secondary and higher education teachers (Escola Superior Pedagógica do Cuando-Cubango, Angola); students in higher education and secondary education (first cycle and second cycle) from the southern region of Angola (Cuando-Cubango). After a contextualization class, post-labour 3rd year undergraduate students from the Mathematics Teaching Course, Cuando-Cubango Pedagogical School, Cuito Cuanavale University, solved the selected tasks that were created or developed based on the artefacts that were identified and analysed. The author of this study took on the role of professor-researcher, and he himself taught the class whose theme was “the oldest mathematical artefacts: an approach to the History of Mathematics”. With this study, it was possible to conclude very clearly that carrying out tasks related to cultural artefacts provides good opportunities for students to develop a taste for mathematics; it also awakens students' interest in learning mathematics; finally, it promotes the link between community-practiced mathematics and academic (school) mathematics.
