Title: | Avaliação dos níveis de radioactividade natural em rochas da região da Catumbela, Angola | Authors: | Pascoal, Saturnino Sauandi Costa | Orientador: | Pereira, Alcides J. S. C. Duarte, Luís Vítor da Fonseca Pinto |
This paper addresses, in a simple and objective way, aspects related to radioactivity, in particular natural radioactivity, and shows how it can be dangerous for humans. The main objective was to assess the levels of natural radioactivity in outcrops of igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks along the banks of the River Catumbela (Catumbela - Angola); those rocks are included in theMetamorphic Complex of pre-Cambrian age, and to Catumbela and Quissonde Formations of Cretaceous age. For this purpose, and with the help of a counter Geiger-Muller device, fluxes of radiation (alpha, beta and gamma) were measured in 116 locations, with the values ranging from 27 to 109 cpm. The measured mean values were 88.2 cpm, 54.7 cpm and 55.8 cpm, respectively for the Metamorphic Complex and for the Catumbela and Quissonde sedimentary Formations. The median values are similar in all cases, indicating the presence of a small variation in the radiometric background in the area. The results are close to those already obtained in similar studies in Angola or Portugal, the carbonate rocks have somewhat higher values in the Angola territory and, in the case of the igneous-metamorphic complex, are located nearby the lower end of the range established in Portuguese rocks . The low radiation fluxes measured in this study allowed to assume that the risks of exposure to ionizing radiation for the local population will be low. |
