This thesis focus on the study of the contamination in the surroundings of the city of Lubango, Angola, through the chemical analysis of heavy metals present in sediments and plants. The study was covered 19 of the rivers surrounding Lubango, including those that are near the city of Lubango as those that are further away. The objective of this research was to identify the existence (or not) of heavy metal pollution in different parts of the surroundings of Lubango (Angola), and samples of sediments and aquatic plants have been used. In the plants, there were analyzed the concentrations of lithium, nickel, cobalt, lead, chromium, copper and zinc. The sediments of the rivers surrounding Lubango, were separated into fractions of different magnetic susceptibility. The results of the tests indicate the presence of high concentrations of metals in almost the entire region covered by this study. The heavy minerals, that were observed in greater quantities, were hematite, magnetite, ilmenite and zircon. In most rivers sampled were found mainly in plants of the genus Polygonum.
