| pt |
dc.description.abstract | The Friction Stir Welding has great potential for the realization of heterogeneous welds, as occurs in the solid state. Past experience and testing conducted during the preparation of this document have shown however that the conventional tool, formed by a rotating shoulder and probe, lead to inadequate welds morphology and low mechanical properties. The latter result from the presence of hard and brittle intermetallic compounds, whose formation is enhanced by the high affinity of base materials and by heat and interaction between materials, generated in the process itself. The development of a stationary shoulder tool aimed to reduce these two effects. Also sought to reduce or eliminate the adhesion of metals to be welded to the shoulder of the tool. The developed tool has adequate strength to carry out the welding and there was no adhesion of material to the tool shoulder during welding. There is however the passage of material between the rotary probe and the fixed shoulder, impeding the continuation of welding. The resolution to this problem must provide a fully operational tool. | pt |
