Title: | Oxitocina: uma esperança para a integração dos autistas | Authors: | Menezes, Daniella de França | Orientador: | Almeida, Leonor Martins | Keywords: | Oxitocina; Autismo; Terapia | Issue Date: | Jul-2014 | Place of publication or event: | Coimbra | Abstract: | As Perturbações do Espectro do Autismo (PEA) são distúrbios do desenvolvimento de
comunicação, comportamento repetitivo e interesse restrito, demonstrando grande
The Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopment disorder characterized by abnormalities in speech and comunication, impaired social functioning, repetitive behaviors and restricted interests. ASD includes Autism, Asperger Syndrome and Pervasive Developmental Disorder with no Other Specification (PDD-NOS), with the same core symptom domains, but differing in the specific symptoms and in their severity. There is no actual treatment for the social deficts of Autism, and the etiology is unknown. Oxytocin is a neuropeptide, known for its peripheral effects on facilitating uterine contractions and milk let-down, however, it is starting to show a role as the “love homone” due to its central effects as a modulator of social behavior, emotion, comunication and anxiety. Extensive data from several studies suggest that oxytocin may play a role in the etiology of Autism and that a single intranasal administration of oxytocin enhances social function. Thus, oxytocin may become a potencial treatment targeting the core deficits of Autism Spectrum Disorder. |
