| pt |
dc.description.abstract | Iodine is a component of thyroid hormones (T3 and T4), taking a major role in fundamental processes of fetal growth, particularly in the development of the central nervous system. Thus, iodine deficiency may cause congenital abnormalities, the most severe of which is cretinism. In order to prevent this problem, it is recommended a daily intake of 150mg of iodine/day in adults and 250mg/day during pregnancy and lactation. This difference is due to modifications of iodine metabolism that occur during pregnancy and to the needs of the infant. The main strategies to correct iodine deficiency are the fortification of salt with iodine and the use of iodine-containing supplements. This actions cause a greater impact when adopted even before conception, in order to ensure adequate iodine stores of the mother, and should be continued throughout lactation. | pt |
