The speed with which technology evolves and is integrated in the educational environment makes us reflect upon our teaching skills and approach to an audience that requires a pedagogical practice based on the interaction among peers and less based on information transmission or "bank", as Freire (1987) critically used to point out. The University, as the unique place which is able to prepare future professionals, has the role to provide individuals able to interact with the technology connected society. The teacher, on one hand is the one who has the difficult task of changing his old paradigms and beliefs put into practice so far; the student, on the other hand, is no longer the passive subject in the teaching process and begins to interact with the "new teacher" and his peers (Kemczinski et al., 2003). Research on distance education in higher education reveals that there is an insufficient number of studies and scientific reports on the three parts that make up the structural and functional mechanism of distance education, that is, teaching competences, involvement and academic success of online students. However, we also recognize that there is an insignificant number of researches on the different profiles of the protagonists working in this new teaching mode: teacher and student. Based on these assumptions, this research, which we are about to present, coincides exclusively in the axes of teaching skills, involvement and academic success with the demand for courses in the Distance Learning (DL) mode in Brazil, and the growing number of people who seek online studies for a chance of higher academic education. The study of teacher and student actions was therefore analyzed in the light of the specifics of DL, in particular the way in which these protagonists articulate their pedagogical practices promoting the desired academic success. This study, therefore, had as the main objective to investigate the teaching and learning roles in the DL mode and its implications, that is, our main goal was to study the teaching competences perceived by the students, the involvement and the academic success in DL, in Institutions of Higher Education (IES ) in Brazil.
The assessment of the dimensions of teachers' skills in distance education perceived by students, involvement and academic success will be investigated through five scales, including the competencies of online teaching success scale, (Bigatel et al. 2012), the students’ engagement in online course scale, (Dixson 2010), the online learning success scale, (Kerr et al. 2003), the interaction, presence and performance in online courses, (Picciano 2002) and the perception satisfaction with online learning success with peers, (Ferreira et al. 2014). For the study of the variables we chose to use the quantitative methodology using five investigative questionnaires in the form of Likert scale, validated in consolidated research, properly authorized by the authors and treated according to the translation procedures established by Brislin (1986). Regarding the psychometric analysis of the instruments, we have chosen to carry out a descriptive statistics first, to portray and synthesize the data collected; then a differential analysis was performed to examine the influence of each set of sociodemographic variables used in the five instruments. Afterwards, a correlational analysis was performed with the objective of assessing the intercorrelations between the variables under study, followed by a factorial analysis with which we could verify the psychometric adequacy of the dimensions assessed by the questionnaires. We concluded our study with the application of the linear regression analysis, with the purpose of analyzing the contribution of the different sets of independent variables in the dependent variables present in the study. The participants of this research were students of higher education courses offered through the DL mode, in two Higher Educational Intitutions in the city of Santos, in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. The quantitative study consisted of a sample of 507 students, of which 62% were female, and 38% were male participants, belonging to different age groups, but most of them were in the age group of adult workers (25-30 years old). The development of our research was based on a set of instruments (5) with the purpose of collecting data related to behaviors, attitudes and beliefs in the performance of the teacher in online courses. Therefore, we have chosen to use these five instruments because they presented satisfactory psychometric qualities of the conceptual structures and internal consistency indexes, which enabled us to use them for our research on students’ perceptions of teaching skills competences, involvement and academic success in online courses. The results indicated that the potential for higher education via Distance Learning programs to be better and more efficient than the traditional / face-to-face programs lies in the student-student / student-teacher relationship. The results also allowed us to find relationships among the constructs and identify the predictive variables of the involvement and academic success of courses in Distance Learning related to students’ perception of the online competences of the teachers. Based on the main conclusions of the present investigation, some measures are suggested for the intervention in the pedagogical practice of Distance Learning in Brazilian higher education, as well as for future investigations in the modality of Distance Learning in Brazil.
