Abstract: There are several options for improving the energy efficiency of heating, ventilation and cooling systems in buildings, but it is often very difficult to determine which will materialise into the best solution. Despite the increasing necessity that energy consumption be reduced overall, the most important requirement of a building is that of maintaining a comfortable thermal environment and a healthy air quality for its occupants. It is, therefore, essential to quantify through objective measures not only the energy consumed in a building but also the environment that people experience inside that building as they go about their daily routine. This is commonly performed using specialised equipment and expert knowledge on an as-needed basis, either to verify systems’ performance at the building commissioning phase, during mandatory energy audits, or in cases where there are systematic complaints by the building occupants. Nevertheless, a building and its systems, its occupants, and the ever changing outdoor environment constitute an evolving dynamical system that cannot be sufficiently characterised through a short-term assessment that only provides a snapshot in time of its dynamics. There are many advantages to be had in introducing distributed, continuous monitoring of the indoor environment. One immediate advantage is simply making visible objective measures about their indoor environment, and thus contributing towards informing and educating building occupants to make them part of inclusive energy saving solutions. Other advantages are, for instance, the possibility to correlate current conditions to past events, which in turn opens the path to the prediction of extreme conditions, adaptive model identification and energy optimised control of the building systems, while ensuring a healthy and comfortable indoor environment. This continuous monitoring can be implemented with low-cost sensors that are readily available on the market today and have sufficient quality to provide indicative measures of most physical parameters of interest. Several aspects of the implementation of continuous monitoring of the indoor environment are explored in this thesis, and a selection of approaches is contributed towards mitigating some of the difficulties encountered in the development of such monitoring systems.
