Under the scope of my PhD in Tourism, Leisure and Culture at the University of Coimbra, I developed a study on the impact of historical re-enactments in Portugal, especially The Medieval Journey in Santa Maria da Feira. Historical re-enactment has expanded greatly in recent years in Portugal, which justifies the debate about this phenomenon - both for a better intrinsic knowledge and for the dissemination of the associated instruments. In a time when local Portuguese government is becoming increasingly aware of its tourism and cultural heritage, and of what the collective memory of the region, consciously or unconsciously, intends to get noticed, it is urgent to ask some questions. These days, taking advantage of this cultural "modality", which can have several valences - in tourism or citizenship - in a sustainable way, can be important to help certain geographic areas, rich in history but without great productive factor, to develop and the according of International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development. Understanding the need for the involvement of the local community, by raising awareness of the importance of its history and of how, by making it a quality product, it can become beneficial for all, can be another tool for the development of various sectors of the region. The aim of this work, through a comparative study of various historic medieval re-enactments in Portugal, is to understand their impact: whether seasonal or permanent jobs are created, if wealth is generated, whether demographic mobility is involved, and if they have an economic impact which is decisive for the development of a certain community, particularly Santa Maria da Feira. The study which is being developed will allow us to obtain an instrument that will be of great utility for the Municipalities, in order to boost the various re-enactment events that have been developed over the years. During the study we will have some important moments: a review of the literature through the reading of 63 titles, the submission of surveys to visitors, reenactors and craftsmen during the Medieval Journey of 2015 and 2016. As a case study, we chose Santa Maria da Feira, which is recognized by participants and visitors as the most important re-enactment event in Portugal. In 2015 and 2016, surveys were conducted on visitors, participants and residents during the Medieval Journey in the Land of Santa Maria, with the population size relation with the sample (table at 95%) and the accepted error in standard deviation at 0,1): Visitors: 384 - Participants - 278, Residents - 383. This survey intends to assess several features, namely to understand the event's geographic dispersion and the economic impact, the degree of satisfaction as well as suggestions for performance improvement. The aim is to compare results in the years 2015 and 2016. This work is also a reflection on the relationships and dynamics that can be established between Tourism, Cultural Heritage, History, Planning and Preservation. We will highlight historical re-enactments, urban renewal and the dream of a theme park in order to make better use of the Santa Maria da Feira's heritage, since Tourism is one of the activities that help to obtain relevant results regarding the preservation of memory and identity, by presenting tourists and / or visitors with the essence and meanings of local heritage. In turn the dynamics obtained allowed the city to regenerate its Historic Centre, the Valley of the Caster River, and the Castle Farm. Santa Maria da Feira, for its heritage, historical tradition and the numerous events it organizes around historical re-enactments, and after the various works of urban renewal stimulated by those events, is a privileged place for the possible implementation of a theme park. As a conclusion, we can say that presently the investment in theme parks is a valid one, since, together with thematic tourism, they generally create new synergies in the regions or localities in which they are installed and can be used to rejuvenate traditional tourist destinations, since they attract new market segments, enhance the image of those destinations and diversify their offer.pt
