Apropriação e conversão do Mosteiro de Santa Cruz. Ensejo e pragmatismo na construção da cidade de Coimbra

Abstract

Uma das principais reformas introduzidas pelo novo Estado liberal foi a extinção de todas as ordens religiosas e a apropriação dos seus bens. Dentro de Coimbra, sede da única Universidade Portuguesa, foram vendidos ou ocupados pelo Estado, vinte e dois Colégios e sete Conventos. Um ano depois, a Câmara Municipal solicitou alguns destes edifícios e as suas Cercas para dar início à transformação da cidade de acordo com os novos princípios de salubridade. Este artigo pretende apresentar, como a modernização de Coimbra durante o século XIX, foi simultaneamente viabilizada e catapultada pelo processo de desamortização dos antigos colégios e conventos da cidade, recorrendo ao exemplo paradigmático do Mosteiro de Santa Cruz, cedido ao município em 1839.

One of State Liberal’s first measurements was the extinguishing of all religious orders and confiscation of their assets. Within Coimbra, seat of the only Portuguese University, were sold or occupied by the state twenty-two Colleges and seven Convents. One year after, the municipal council requested some of these plots and buildings, initiating the transformation of the city according to the new principles of salubrity. This paper intends to present how Coimbra became a modern city in consequence of the appropriation of Mosteiro de Santa Cruz, transferred to the municipality in 1839. These properties will accommodate the city hall and all the government bureaus, the court as well as the Post Office. The Market will be implanted in the orangery and the haystack will be converted into Slaughterhouse. But fundamentally, will be within the former Monastery Farm that the city council will create the first modern quarters, the Bairro de Santa Cruz.
