Urinary tract infections are the diseases that bring the greater number of medical visits annually and, although it affects the whole population in general, women have a greater predisposition either by the penetration on the bladder of bacteria outside the body, either by the migration of bacteria from the anus or vagina. Although urinary infections are often asymptomatic, in most cases they present symptoms ranging from frequent urination and urgent need to urinate, painful urination, to febrile. In most cases, the bacteria Escherichia coli is responsible for the infection, and the adhesion of this bacteria is accompanied by the binding of lectins to the exposed surface of their fimbriae, the carbohydrates in the host tissue. Overuse of antimicrobials leads to a significant increase of resistances, making necessary the use of alternative therapies for the prevention and treatment of such infections. Therefore, herbal medicines such as Vaccinium myrtillus L., Vaccinium macrocarpon Ait., Arctostaphylos uva-ursi (L.) Spreng, Taraxacum officinale Wiggers, Urtica dioica L. e Urtica urens L., emerge as potential pharmaceutical indications, to the extent that whenever possible users avoid the use of antibiotics, these softer treatments, in addition to be used as a prophylactic they may also, in some cases, be recommended for the treatment of urinary tract infections.pt
