Abstract: Em 1891, foi doada à Biblioteca Nacional do Brasil pelo ex-imperador Pedro II, a coleção D. Thereza Christina Maria (CTCM). ABSTRACT In 1891 the Thereza Christina Maria collection (CTCM) was donated to the National Library of Brazil by the former emperor Pedro II. The collection, rich in its heterogeneity, includes a music section with more than a thousand musical works. It is this that forms the object of study of the present thesis. Although more than a century has passed since the donation, the section pertaining to music, housed today in the Institution’s Music Division and Sound Archive, has not yet in effect been delimited and, regrettably, the total number of items that constitute it remains unknown. This situation is partly the consequence of an earlier system organization that led to the complete dispersal of its elements, to the extent that not even using informatic search tools is it possible to reconstitute it. In this way, the non-existence of an inventory of the works belonging to the CTCM, as well as the many difficulties that have to be overcome in order to consult the data, have become real obstacles to identifying and studying this musical heritage at all. I regard initiatives that seek to enhance access to the contents of musical collections as being imperative. Otherwise, we run the risk of undertaking research that is constantly undermined by an inadequate perception of the collection under scrutiny as a whole and, consequently, a reduced awareness of its possible contexts. Encouraged by this intent, I have undertaken a painstaking examination of the collection with a view to delimiting the music section and producing a correspondingly detailed inventory. Having done this, I have sought to characterize the new group of works thus identified, the periods covered, how many manuscripts and prints there are, what composers, musical groupings and dedications are to be found. Following this, I have attempted a first critical reading of the musical content of the CTCM with a view to understanding to what end and whom all this music served, and the extent to which the repertoire present might or might not reflect personal musical practices, or those of the court and society of the time.
