From a historical approach, this essay seeks to understand the role of the informal economy in the spatial configuration of a divided and unequal urban form. Unlike classical works, the article attempts to reconnect the informal production of space with the state political order. The case of Lisbon supports a powerful critique, rethinking the problem of spatial illegalism beyond the categories and normative analyses of the experts who understand the production of uneven urban division as a consequence of tolerance by authoritarian populism and of the rurality of migrants. Finally, the article draws attention to the need to articulate an ethnographic and historical methodology in order to focus on the role of politics, decision-making, and the question of governmentality in the production of urban division and inequality. |
