Imagem de Deus e Região de Indigência - A Transcendência e a Falta como Dimensões Constitutivas do Homem Segundo Agostinho

Abstract

O presente estudo tem como objeto os fenómenos da imagem de Deus e da região de indigência, tal como estes se acham identificados e descritos na obra augustiniana. Pretende-se mostrar que a transcendência e a falta são dimensões constitutivas do acontecimento humano, pelo que nem uma nem a outra podem ser eliminadas sem a concomitante destruição de quem o homem propriamente é. Após um conjunto de incursões introdutórias – no qual são apresentados o projeto, o método e os termos da dissertação –, tenta-se dar a ver, na primeira parte, até onde conduzem as interpretações que sobrevalorizam uma das dimensões desprezando a outra. Será posto em evidência que, apesar de serem inicialmente opostas uma à outra, tais interpretações desembocam no mesmo erro, o qual consiste, justamente, em esquecer que o acontecimento humano é simultaneamente imagem e indigência, transcendência e falta. O local de chegada da primeira parte é, ao mesmo tempo, local de partida da segunda. Com efeito, esta apresenta pela positiva o que aquela assinala pela negativa: desvela fenómenos centrais para uma compreensão efetiva da imagem de Deus e da região de indigência como vertentes dialeticamente relacionadas. Não se fica, portanto, pela exposição de até onde leva o desprezo por este facto. Os diálogos de Cassicíaco serão, nesse contexto, o fio condutor da análise. Os fenómenos apresentados pela negativa na primeira parte e pela positiva na segunda são, por sua vez, desenvolvidos na terceira e na quarta. Aquela incide sobre a aplicabilidade da imagem de Deus ao homem; esta centra-se na indigência enquanto região habitada pelo ser humano. A conjugação da transcendência e da falta, descrita por Agostinho e aprofundada ao longo da dissertação que ora se inicia, é terminada nas conclusões.

The present study has as its subject the phenomena of the image of God and of the region of indigence, in the sense in which these are identified and described in the Augustinian work. It intends to demonstrate that transcendence and lack are constitutive dimensions of the human happening, so that neither one nor the other can be eliminated without the concomitant destruction of what man properly is. After a series of introductory incursions – in which the project, the method and the terms of the dissertation are presented – it is attempted here to show, in the first part, where the interpretations that overemphasize one of the dimensions while despising the other lead. Subsequently, it will be held up to view that, although initially opposed to each other, such interpretations wind up in the same error, which consists precisely in forgetting that the human happening is simultaneously image and indigence, transcendence and lack. The point of arrival of the first part is, at the same time, the point of departure of the second part. Indeed, the indicated presents, on a positive level, that which the former identifies on a negative one: it unveils central phenomena for an effective understanding of the image of God and of the region of indigence as dialectically related aspects. It does not, therefore, stop at the exposition of how far the disregard for this fact leads to. The Cassiciacum dialogues are, in this context, the conducting thread of the analysis. The phenomena shown by what they are not in the first part and by what they really are in the second one are, in turn, developed in the third and fourth. While one focuses on the applicability of the image of God to man, the other centres itself on indigence as a region inhabited by the human being. The conjugation of transcendence and lack, described by Augustin and deepened along the course of the dissertation that is now initiated, is terminated in the conclusions.
