Abstract: A expressão territorial da identidade religiosa da população católica portuguesa.
Territorial expression of the Portuguese population religious identity. A study case of Coimbra’s diocese. Under this title, the present doctoral dissertation aims to study religion as a geographical phenomenon by analysing the use, production and appropriation of the spaces motivated by a human behaviour associated to religion or devotion regarding sacred or spiritual elements. This work is theoretically grounded on cultural geography methodologies and concepts, but also on the geography of religion, both framed by human geography. The state-of-the-art has encompassed the Berkley School theoretical basis, namely focusing on Carl Sauer and David Sopher, authors that have shown the existence of a superorganic culture and defended the possibility of studying homogeneous cultural areas or mosaic patterns, but also material landscapes. We also underline the importance, in geographical studies, of the cultural turn movement and geography’s overture to diverse research areas, constantly adapting its methodologies, including new actors and embracing new themes. Post-structuralism and the deconstruction of several realities that were the fundament of modern society enabled the emergence of a more critical geography – socially more inclusive and more qualitative in terms of methodology. Duncan, Cosgrove, Jackson, Hall, Tuan, Thrift, Stump, Kong and Stoddard are some of the authors that have worked under this new perspective that approaches the world of meanings, symbolism, imagination, perception, representation, but also beliefs and religious devotions that, in certain contexts, motivate and justify people’s behaviours. Through these disciplines – cultural geography and geography of religion – we show that culture, religion, identities, places, spaces, territories and landscapes have been suffering a process of deconstruction and adaptation to changes due to globalization and post-modern societies. 14 Geography studies have tried to understand and show this adaptation, incorporating the effects of instantaneity, hybridism, multiterritorialities, multiscales and multitemporalities. Therefore, geography studies, even when associated to religion, have tried to show the different fluxes and directions, uses and diverse appropriation of religious territories. They aim to explain that even amongst apparently homogeneous communities, such as the Catholic Church, there are discontinuities and singularities that should be subject to analysis. Nowadays, religious identities are not unique, but plural and diverse, and are linked to other components of cultural identity. Each person defines and constructs its emotional ties with sacred places. These ties represent different degrees of connection, interaction and hierarchy, and therefore shape unique and complex territories. They also shape post-representational landscapes that are inherent to each context, combining material and immaterial elements. There is a life path that is parallel to the religious path that put together and in association with other identity variables shape each person’s spatial behaviour. Bearing in mind that religion is only one of the variables that explain the geographical reality, we describe the catholic population’s evolution and distribution on national territory. We seek a vast and comprehensive justification of this movement, linking it with the major social, cultural, political, juridical, economical and demographic changes that occurred in Portugal since the 20th century. These changes have revealed and heterogeneous and diverse country where the presence and influence of the Catholic Church is balanced by the progressive diversity of beliefs and religious or spiritual devotions, and also by the loss of ties with the religious world. The regional analysis of a set of sociodemographic indicators has allowed to explain, in part, the image of a country that progressively changed its homogeneous etnocultural identity, based on the historical power and presence of the Catholic Church in many segments of society. 15 On another scale, we have tried to analyse the heterogeneity in the context of the diocese and district of Coimbra. The evolution and distribution of the catholic population did not occur in the same way and with the same intensity in every parish in the district. There are significant differences between urban and rural parishes. We have found that different expressions of the religious territoriality depend on geographical factors such as the place of residence or the location of holy places (churches), but are also defined by the social and economical profile of the believers, practicing and integrated in the dioces of Coimbra. This means that the relation with the living space is rich in terms of interaction and experiences. The relationship, perception and appropriation of sacred places deeply depends on a set of factors, from age to gender or social situation, resulting on religious multiterritorialities.
