A mobilidade académica europeia e o turismo educativo e cultural: factores de decisão e de motivação

Abstract

O objetivo deste estudo divide-se em duas questões de partida. Por um lado a investigação dos motivos e fatores de decisão que estimulam a realização de uma mobilidade académica europeia e, por outro, a identificação dos padrões e tendências que aproximam a mobilidade académica do turismo educacional e cultural. Para obtenção dos dados optou-se pela aplicação de inquéritos administrados de forma direta em formato online, em inglês e português. Foram aplicados 880 inquéritos a 463 estudantes portugueses (outgoing) e 417 estudantes estrangeiros (incoming), que realizaram uma mobilidade académica inserida no programa Erasmus durante os anos letivos 2009/2010 (2º semestre) e 2010/2011 (1º semestre). O tratamento dos dados dos inquéritos foi, numa primeira fase, submetido a uma análise estatística descritiva. Numa segunda fase foi efetuada uma análise estatística inferencial com o teste T Student (SPSS 19), ferramenta que permitiu verificar se existiam diferenças significativas entre as amostras e assim obtendo resposta às hipóteses colocadas. A estatística comparativa facultou dados que identificaram características semelhantes e diferentes entre grupos (incoming/outgoing), de género e relação entre motivos académicos e motivos turísticos. Por último, para identificar padrões de comportamentos, optámos por efetuar uma análise de clusters e, dadas as características das variáveis que o nosso estudo comporta, optámos por utilizar o algoritmo Two Step. Os dados provenientes dos estudos empíricos permitiram identificar os motivos e fatores de decisão mais valorizados pelos estudantes aquando da tomada de decisão de realizar uma mobilidade académica. De entre os resultados obtidos destaca-se que a mobilidade académica tem associado à tomada de decisão um motivo principal, mas não único. A decisão é tomada mediante um motivo principal, mas influenciado por uma associação de outros fatores motivadores e decisivos. Outra característica importante, que se destaca, é que a decisão é pessoal, sendo que as particularidades culturais e sociais do habitat em que estudante vive são um fator influente e preponderante na decisão. Esta distinção está patente aquando a aplicação da análise de clusters, em que obtivemos três grupos distintos: um primeiro grupo engloba todos os inquiridos que privilegiam atividades ligadas à cultura; um segundo grupo, onde predominam os alunos estrangeiros que realizam uma mobilidade académica em Portugal que procuram ter novas experiências sobretudo a nível pessoal; um terceiro grupo constituído maioritariamente por alunos portugueses que realizam uma mobilidade académica na Europa, e que procuram um desenvolvimento a nível cultural e académico. Cada grupo tem especificidades que nos permitem distingui-los entre si, identificando os motivos e fatores de decisão de cada um. A conclusão deste estudo permite identificar que os motivos e fatores de decisão se relacionam, sobretudo, com o segmento do turismo cultural. Existindo no entanto, no grupo dos estudantes portugueses, características que o interligam, também, ao turismo educacional. Esta investigação identifica nas suas linhas gerais que não existe um motivo predominante, mas sim uma associação de indicadores que são a alavanca na tomada de decisão.

The aim of this study is divided into two main issues. On the one hand the investigation of the motives and decision factors that stimulate the realization of a European academic mobility, and secondly, the identification of patterns and trends that bring together academic mobility and cultural and educational tourism. The data was obtained through the application of surveys administered directly in an online format, in English and Portuguese. 880 surveys were administered to 463 Portuguese students (outgoing) and to 417 foreign students (incoming), which attended an academic mobility inserted in the Erasmus program during the academic years 2009/2010 (2nd semester) and 2010/2011 (1st semester). First, the data from the survey was initially subjected to a descriptive statistical analysis. In the second phase, the data was subjected to an inferential statistical analysis with the Student T test (SPSS 19), a tool that allowed us to check whether there were significant differences between samples and thus obtaining answers to the assumptions made. The comparative statistical analysis has provided data that identified characteristics similar and different between groups (incoming / outgoing) about the relationship between academic reasons and tourism motives. Finally, to identify behaviour patterns, we decided to make a cluster analysis and, given the characteristics of the variables of our study, we decided to use the Two Step algorithm. The data obtained from the empirical studies has allowed to identify the reasons and decision factors most valued by students when making a decision to conduct an academic mobility. From the results obtained, we highlight that the decision making process in choosing an academic mobility program is associated with one main reason, but not unique. The decision is made by one main reason, but influenced by a combination of factors. Another important feature that stands out is that the decision is personal, and the cultural and social habitat in which student lives is a prominent and influential factor in the decision. This distinction is evident at the cluster analysis, in which we obtained three distinct groups: the first group includes all respondents who prefer activities related to culture, a second group, dominated by foreign students who perform an academic mobility in Portugal and seek to have new experiences especially on a personal level and a third group consisting mainly of Portuguese students who perform academic mobility in Europe, and are seeking cultural and academic development. Each group has specific characteristics that allow us to distinguish them from each other, identifying their distinctive reasons and decision factors. The conclusion of this study identified that the reasons and decision factors relate mainly to the segment of cultural tourism. There are, however, in the group of Portuguese students, features that connect also to educational tourism. This research identifies in general terms that there is no predominant reason but a combination of indicators that are the lever in decision making.
