A actividade humana é a principal causa do aquecimento global do Planeta e das consequentes alterações climáticas.
Nowadays, human activity is the main cause of global warming and climate changes. Thus, the sustainability agenda simultaneously demands energy conservation alongside the use of low impact materials to reduce the consumption of raw materials and prevent the emission of the harmful gases that lead to global warming. The use of environmentally friendly materials can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and therefore encourage the development of a sustainable construction industry. The use of native materials and exploitation of industrial waste are interesting solutions which can address both energy and environment concerns. Indeed, studies on the potential of industrial waste as an alternative to the usual materials are extremely useful for the construction materials industry and the physical and mechanical characterization of such waste materials is essential to understand their behavior and to build suitable mathematical models. Cork, as a natural resource that is renewable and recyclable, fulfills the above requirements. Portugal has the world’s largest supply of cork oak trees. Cork is a low density material and provides excellent thermal and acoustic insulation. Granular cork waste can be used as aggregate in lightweight cementitious composites such as concrete, mortar and screeds. An ordinary screed mixture is usually made of cement, water and aggregate. Screeds can be laid over structural concrete slabs to produce a level surface. Floor coverings such as parquet, ceramic tiles and vinyl carpet can be laid afterwards. This work explores the possibility of producing lightweight screed with cement mixtures (cement, natural river sand and water) in which the sand is partially replaced with waste cork granules. Several cement-cork formulations were developed, resulting in three lightweight screed mixtures with distinct cement, sand and water contents, and incorporating expanded cork granules (ECG). Three additional mixtures, with the same cement content as the lightweight ones but without cork granules, were prepared and used as reference. The main purpose of this study was to characterize the mechanical, hygrothermal and acoustic performance of the lightweight cement-cork screeds. Laboratory experiments were performed to characterize them and to validate numerical models to simulate the thermal and acoustic behavior of other constructive solutions. Hardened density, compressive strength, thermal conductivity, water vapor permeability, adsorption isotherms and water absorption by partial immersion were determined. Four mortars made of cement, water and various aggregates (i.e. expanded clay and expanded polystyrene aggregates, sand and ECG) and lightweight concretes with ECG were also studied so as to compare some of the hygrothermal results and understand the influence of the presence of ECG in cementitious mixtures. The lightweight screeds were included in multilayer floor systems as the final covering and as the resilient layer under floating slabs. The reduction of impact sound pressure levels of the mentioned multilayer systems was experimentally obtained. These tests were carried out in vertical chambers at the Institute for Research and Technological Development in Construction Sciences (ITeCons) facilities. The vertical chambers were constructed during the course of the present work and so the preparatory procedures and their validation are also described. The dynamic stiffness of the lightweight screeds was determined experimentally to relate it to the results of the tests performed in the vertical chambers. The numerical model was validated by the experimental results, which showed that the validated model can predict the impact sound insulation of other multilayer floor systems that include lightweight screeds with ECG. The specific heat was obtained indirectly by means of numerical models and monitoring the unsteady state heat conduction through the lightweight screeds. The simulation of the unsteady state heat conduction made it possible to predict the thermal delay of the multilayer systems that include lightweight screeds with ECG-
