The search for greater sustainability has fostered the increasing development of new products that promote recovery and better usage of industrial waste. Particularly with regard to concrete and mortar, various types of waste have been introduced which replace all or part of natural aggregates (sand and gravel) and confer on them other characteristics, both in terms of mechanical strength and durability. Portuguese cork industry consumes annually more than 280 thousand tons of cork. However, it is observed that a significant amount of raw materials received in processing units (20% to 30%) is rejected, particularly in the form of granules for what may prove to be economically interesting to find alternative uses for these wastes. This study examines the possibility of using granulated cork as aggregates in the composition of concrete and mortars, being used as a total or partial replacement for common aggregates. It is intended to evaluate the impact of the incorporation of cork in the mechanical properties and durability of these materials. To this end, different compositions have been tested using two types of cork granules as aggregates: natural and expanded. The effect of the size of the granules and the amount of cork in mixtures were also analysed. The results obtained were compared with those from tests conducted in a current concrete. The study has a significant laboratory component, including a significant number of trials. In addition to standard tests testing schemes have been designed and implemented which enabled the evaluation of drying time, resistance to freeze-thaw cycles, behaviour at high temperatures and resistance to chloride penetration of concrete.
