The Peer Support in Health Education has been shown to be an effective strategy for Health Promotion and Well-being. Yet, studies on this subject are still limited in our country. The present investigation sought to understand whether university students help their peers and are also helped themselves in relation to issues/problems of Health. It intended also to understand the importance of Peer Counselling in the level of self-perceived stress and level of well-being of students. We interviewed one hundred sixty-six students at the University of Coimbra, who answered the Student Questionnaire in Peer Health Education (which was constructed in this study), the scale of Identification of Factors of Stress in University Students (Pereira et al., 2003) and the Well-Being Manifestation Measure Scale (Massé et al., 1998; Portuguese version: Monteiro, Tavares & Pereira, 2005). From the data collected, we found that a large proportion of the students has helped friends/colleagues to face problems of physical and/or mental disabilities and also most of them have received help. Specifically, students who supported colleagues to experience a physical health problem they feel useful; capable of finding answers to their own problems and concerns; and show to feel good and at peace with themselves. In addition, the fact that they helped colleagues to face a mental health problem makes them feel more confident. We also noticed that students who had lower levels of stress were those who were involved in the process of helping each other or receiving help. Some implications of this study are refered in order to change risky behaviors and promote health in the Higher Education context through the peer intervention.por
