After the recognition of human fossils in the rst decades of the 19th century, with several discoveries in Europe, Portugal also started the discussion about human antiquity and prehistoric occupation of the Portuguese territory. At that time prevailed the craniometric analysis mainly related to “races” morphology, with a great in uence of the French school. This was the theoretical background of Estácio da Veiga research on paleoethnology. In the study of the human skulls recovered during the elaboration of the archaeological map of the Algarve, Estácio da Veiga counted with the collaboration of Ferraz de Macedo. The work of Estácio da Veiga portraits the knowledge at the beginnings of physical anthropology complemented by his strong critical and interdisciplinary vision.por
